chain counter

Not sure where to ask this question, but this might be the right thread

I would like to install a chain counter that doesn't require a separate display, as in it would be nice to tie it into my chart plotter (seems that modern chart plotters have all sorts of options with regards to inputs such as cameras, engine guages, wind instruments, and a whole host of other things)

I am about to install a new Raymarine plotter, and would love to include a chain counter as well

Looking for some advice

thanks in advance

Re: chain counter

Tape measure
Coloured rope tied through chain
Ability to count to 5 if using small numbers.
(Our first bit of coloured rope is 40 meter's so I only need to count to 2)

No screen required

Re: chain counter

In the Raymarine world that would be part of the data overlay section on the MFD. What is available in Data Overlay is listed in the Lighthouse X.xx Advanced Operation Instructions.

For instance, see the acceptable PGNs starting on page 30 of Lighthouse 3.16 AOI

Also starting at page 30 for Lighthouse 4.0 AOI

Rode counter/distance doesn't seem to be in there anywhere, although you might be able to massage some other value to work. There is a 5-year-old feature request for this on the Ray forums, not many comments/upvotes, so likely hasn't been picked up for implementation.

So you can see little bits of coloured rope on the chain from 40 feet away at the helm. Impressive

Re: chain counter

Use the race timer. 2min countdown= 50m chain down. Adjust to your winch speed of course.

For the last six years out here from inside the wheelhouse , yes
And for us with 40 m as the first mark and 2nd at 50 I usually only need to see one
But reality is I have someone in the bow ready to hook on the snubber anyway
