Cell Phone Question

I had a Sony Xperia phone which was supposedly water spray resisting but which quit working after a wave knocked me over whilst trying to launch my dingy in a fairly light surf. I have now gone back to the cheap phone in a ziplok bag solution.

I just finished a 4,000nm coastal voyage around the top of the Australian continent and had phone reception for about half the voyage. The coverage appears to be getting better as time goes by.

I have a HF radio for getting daily weather reports but do not use it for regular communications as with scheduling and propagation problems it is not a very convenient way to communicate.

If I wanted to ensure I had comms all the time I would probably invest in a sat phone.
