But wait a minute -- don't you have the possibility with an i-thing to use virtual SIM cards? Won't they let you have more than one of those?

Some iPhone now support e-sims

Personally I’m roaming within the EU and my Vodafone red roaming elsewhere in the Workd is quite reasonable so I never change sims , I have the same mobile number since 1995

These days I find what apps calling to be the majority method for “ lesiure “ users. The number therefore being less important then the what’s app identify.

Re: Cell COVERAGE Worldwide at a decent price??

I seem to struggle along with my single sim I-phones but then i have three.

OK so two are used these days as action camera controllers.

Back on topic.
Here in Ecuador I use a local Claro sim. You can buy them in any shopping centre, $US5.

Top ups are $10/10gig which lasts two of us about 5 or 6 days - mainly viop and standard internet stuff, an extra 10gig is included for use between 2400 and 0600. I don't make many standard 'in country' phone calls - just contractors and stuff.

Entel have the best coverage in Chile - in fact the only coverage in the remoter bits of the south.

For context, there do not exist any cellular plans marketed as being suitable for "extended international use." They all presume most usage will be in one country (or several), usually the one where the plan is purchased.

The OP is, presumably from the opening post, domiciled, a citizen of, and a resident of, the USA. The OP asks about a circumnavigation and does not mention any extended stays (>6 months) in any one place or of setting up a long-term residency somewhere outside the USA and then returning there rather than to the USA periodically.

Of the available plans, for those circumstances, Fi will likely work out the best, supplemented by local SIMs as described upthread.
