Can't update my Raymarine C80 chartplotter

Hi there,

My C80 chartplotter is running firmware version 4.26.

I want to update it to the latest version.

I am using a 128mb compact flash card.

I have extracted the 2 firmware files (for V5.16) onto the card as per the instructions on the Raymarine site.

I power off the chartplotter and insert the update card. The I power it on and the plotter boots up normally. As in it does not load the update files.

I tried the same with the V4.30 firmware files. Still cannot get the plotter to update.

Any ideas on what I may be doing wrong?

Re: Can't update my Raymarine C80 chartplotter

Here are the instructions from Raymarine:

Upgrading the C-Series or E-Series MFD

Now that you have backed up your data for safe keeping, we will upgrade the MFD software.

Turn off the power to your MFD unit, and remove any installed Navionics Chart or CF memory cards.
Insert the CF memory card containing you just prepared into the card slot on your C-Series or E-Series MFD.
Turn on the MFD unit's power with the red power button.
The MFD will power up to a Software Update Utility screen like that pictured below.

In the column on the left under "Upgrade Packages Available" there should be a single file listed. Its name corresponds
to the name of the PKG file that you copied to your CF memory card.

Note:In the event this CF memory card has been used for previous upgrades of the MFD, you may see previous upgrade
packages available as well. Highlight the one corresponding to the latest software version using the track pad control.
Press the soft key labeled "UPGRADE THIS UNIT."

You will see first a single bar, then a double-bar progress indicator appear indicating that the software is being transferred.
This process can take up to 90 seconds.

When the progress indicator reaches 100%, it will disappear to indicate that the software upgrade is complete.
Remove the upgrade card from the card reader slot.
Press the soft key labeled "REBOOT."

The MFD will restart and come up in normal operating mode.
You can confirm that the upgrade was successful by examining the "Navigation Warning" dialog box that appears at startup.
The software version installed in the MFD is indicated on the lower right corner of the box, as illustrated below and circled in magenta.

Press the OK to continue as you normally would.
As a final step in the process we must reset the MFD for the final initialization of the new software to occur.
Press and hold down the power key until the MFD shuts off.
Press and hold down the left-most soft key, while simultaneously pressing the releasing the power key.
The MFD will power on, then the words "Factory Reset" and a countdown 3...2...1 appear.
You must hold in the left-most soft key throughout the entire countdown.
The MFD will then restart. When the "Limitations of Use" disclaimer appears, press OK to accept the terms.
Power off the MFD.

Press and hold down the left-most soft key, while simultaneously pressing the releasing the power key to perform a second Factory Reset.
The MFD will power on, then the words "Factory Reset" and a countdown 3...2...1 appear.
You must hold in the left-most soft key throughout the entire countdown.
The MFD will then restart. When the "Limitations of Use" disclaimer appears, press OK to accept the terms.
You may reinsert your Navionics Chart card at any time.
At this point the MFD is ready for normal operation. You should restore your waypoints and routes from your CF memory card.
As well, if you customized any of the settings (ex. page customization, units configuration, chart layer configuration, etc.),
you will need to manually re-configure these settings. Please refer to your owner’s handbook for more details.

Re: Can't update my Raymarine C80 chartplotter

Hi there,

Thank you for your reply with the instruction.

I can confirm that I followed those instructions.

I found out the problem was with the make of compact flash card. I ended up having to use a Sandisk.

"... I power it on and the plotter boots up normally. As in it does not load the update files."

It sounds like your flash card has not been set up properly or the C80 cannot read the card. I assume by normal you mean the C80 displays the generic world map, not a Navionic chart map.
Make sure the update files are the only files on the card, or at least the only files in the root directory. When you tried to load the 4.30 firmware, was this on the same card as you used for the attempted the 5.16 load? Does your Navionics chart card load correctly? It is possible you have bent a pin in the card receptacle. Make sure you can at least still load the charts card.

Re: Can't update my Raymarine C80 chartplotter

Most all modern day compact flash cards cannot be read by the firmware in old Raymarine chart plotters. You will have to find an old flash card that is compatible. These are rare today. Check with Raymarine tech support:

Raymarine.ning.com

Find model numbers of cards that will work and then scour e-bay and any computer salvage web sites for one of these old cards. Sometimes you can find a boating friend with an old chart card they don't use. These will usually work for the software update.

My C80 Manual says to only use ScanDisk cards.

Re: Can't update my Raymarine C80 chartplotter

I remember reading that the CF card should not be larger than 32 MEGABYTES, not gigabytes. Maybe that is your problem. I have a C120 and scrounged an old CF card that is 32mb and I have no problems.

It's all to force us to buy more and more...

If companies built things to last forever, most of them would be out of business.

Edson is one company that builds in dependability and quality and their service is fantastic...I changed the wheel lock brake shoes and when my old locking knob didn't thread the new brake shoes, Edson sent me a new knob with the new thread for FREE...Blue Sea once sent me a new circuit breaker overnight from Washington to Holland for free...

Re: Can't update my Raymarine C80 chartplotter

Waking this old thread up.
I need to update my Raymarine C80 Classic.
I have got hold of 2 old Sandisk Compact Flash cards.
One 256MB and one 512MB.
I have formatted them to FAT.
I try to save tracks and routes but when selecting SAVE ALL the plotter does not recognize the card and i get "SAVE FAIL"
Neither of the cards work.
I have not yet tried to do the upgrade as I do not want to do that until I have a card that works with the plotter.
Can anyone guide me into getting this to work ?
The card reader reads the Navionics charts without a problem.

Re: Can't update my Raymarine C80 chartplotter

The last software upgrade was a decade ago and I think included a change to allow cards larger than about 128mb. Has the 5.16 update been applied to the C80?

Re: Can't update my Raymarine C80 chartplotter

Yes, the instruction says no more than 128MB for upgrading.
But I am not able to save tracks or routes on cards of size 256 or 512 MB despite the plotter can read the Navionics charts on a 2 GB CF.
Why is this ?

Oh boy, that's really old I am guessing that it has never been updated and likely came from the dealer like that. The music has stopped and you have been left holding the parcel.

You need a tiny card and it really wants to be a scandisk rather than "el cheapo" type..

Ok, Thanks Pete. How tiny is tiny ? Will 128 MB do ?
What surprises me is that it reads the Navionics card without any problems even thou it's 2 GB.

Re: Can't update my Raymarine C80 chartplotter

I had CF cards of the proper size 5 years ago, but could not get my RayMarine E120 to load the software update. I ended up buying the update online and it worked immediately.
