Can someone recommend a cellphone plan?

I'm going to need a cell phone for the first time this year. The phone company has removed the pay phone from the marina/boatyard where I store and prep my boat for the winter's cruising. I'll have to get a cell phone to be able communicate with shops and workmen.

Are there any cellphone plans that fit my planned usage? I'll be in Stuart, Florida in southeast Flordia. I'll use the phone ONLY for the 6-8 weeks that I'm there and again for a few weeks when I return at the end of the season. I'd hope NOT to pay for the phone for the six months that I'm out cruising and again for the 4 months while I'm at home. I'd only use the cellphone for a 2 month period and then later for a one month period. Are there penalties for not having continuous usage? Such as connect fees or high per minute charges, or ???.

Thanks,

Norm

In Europe we have a pay as you use type for people who only use their phones occasionally. There are no monthly charges, but individual calls are more expensive. Buy more air time as required by purchase of cards from local stores, or direct by credit card to the air time providers. I would be amazed if you dont have a similar system in Florida.

I know that Virgin offers such a plan in the US. You have to purchase a Virgin phone offcourse (approx. $70.00) plus their cards. These come at different values depending how much calling you do. Here is a link to their USA site:

Thanks.
The problem with Virgin is that it requires regular payments. Their plan says:
"Just spend $20 every 90 days (even if you have a balance) and your account will stay healthy and active."

If I'm not using the phone for 10 months of the year, I'll still have to pay over $120 for a service I'm not using.

Are there any plans that don't have this charge? Or with a much smaller charge?

Norm

I know that I have seen prepaid cell phones advertised, where you just pay for the minutes you use. You might want to try a google search for prepaid cellular.

Intelos had a prepad cell phone plan 2 years ago. A $30 or $40 set up fee and then you buy a card every month. Once you go so many months in a row without buying a card you loose your phone number and have to pay a new set up fee when you start using it again.
