Can a ST 5000+ Raymarine Autopilot Control head work together with a Autohelm 2000 St
Hello my dear cruising friends.
I have a Raymarine ST 5000 + Autopilot which works nicely together with its remote strut moving the tiller.
The cable between them has two wires + & - (Brown & Blue)
Now I also have a Autohelm 2000 remote strut as spare. The cable leading to it is a 4 wire cable (Blue,Green Yellow, Red) though.
Is there a way to connect that strut with the 2wire cable from the ST 5000 + control head installation?
I do not want to run both struts at once.
Just would like to be able to use the Autohelm 2000 strut as a spare should the 5000 strut fail.
If it is necessary to open the 2000 strut and modify the wiring, I can do that with some instructions :-)
Thanks for your thoughts!
Franziska

Does really noone have a clue on this? What are the for cables of the Autohelm 2000 actually doing? Maybe someone has a wiring diagram?
Thanks for any help.

Sure the one with 4 wires has 2 grounds and 2 power wires. A pair for each direction. The other one has just 1 pair and a relay for changing directions.

Good thought.
The control head has only 2 terminals (Brown and Blue).
So according to your thought it would trigger the relay with a signal before giving power so that it can interpretate the direction it has to move the ram to.
Guess without that relay I could not get the 4 wire strut understand the same signals as the 2wire strut.
Bummer.

Hmm.So open the 2wire one to see which one I need and than buy that one.
Still will it not be proprietary to Seatalk?

I think the actuators are just reversible dc motors. Any talking is done by the control heads.
You could have all kinds of problems with the motor speed, turn rates etc. etc. with the different actuators, or maybe not. You should try it and let us know.

i believe the one with 4 wires has limit switch in it to determine end limits, connect the blue and brown the same on both.

Short feedback.
Looks like the Blue and Red wires seem to be all that is needed when running the Autohelm 2000 ram with a ST 5000 Control Head.
The Yellow and Green wires need to be thoroughly sealed off or deconnected.
Testsail to follow.

Yellow and green are probably the clutch. Without them the motor will operate but not move the ram.
The clutch connects and disconnects to allow the boat to be steered manually when the autopilot is not being used.

Re: Can a ST 5000+ Raymarine Autopilot Control head work together with a Autohelm 200
Works fine without green and yellow, this type of ram has no clutch.
The ram moves with the signals of the ST 5000 + control head. Testsailed it yesterday.
One needs to adjust the response speed a little when replacing with the ST 4000 ram.
I can live with that as it is my backup unit.

I do not remember which cable is which (and do not really want to undo it now).
But a + and a - is all that is needed. If you hook them reverse the ram will work in reverse [emoji6]
