It depends greatly on your chosen cruising grounds. I suggest you use Mr Google to search for "SSB marine nets" and "HAM Marine Nets". You will find many sites with lists of nets and info on each. Many nets have websites.

SSB is not of much use, as it uses preprogrammed " channels" usually in a duplex format and usually only operates on the upper sideband.
At one time, ATT operated the High Seas Operator, allowing you to " call home" so to speak, but they are not around anymore.

Ham radio on the other hand, allows you to roam the full extent of the allocated frequency range, both upper and lower bands..
Off course, you'll need to get a "Ham" license, but these days there is no longer a morse code requirement, so studying for your Ham license is relatively straight forward.

There are so many nets available, it would take a long time to list them all. As above, you can google search for these. Nets operate on different frequencies at different times of the day.

Useful to make a list of the one's most practical for your use, and have these posted nearby.

My best advice is to join a local Ham Club where most members will bend over backwards to teach you and show you where, how and when to operate a Ham radio effectively. A lot of members will also be able to provide you with a " phone patch" should you want to call home.

Besides that, you yourself, should spend time on the radio, lissen in where you can, etc.
It will take some time to absorb it all. Not difficult or complicated, just takes time.

Assuming you are east coast/Bahamas:

Cruiseheimers - 0830 EST/EDT - 8152 Marine SSB
Doodah - 1700 EST/EDT - 8152 Marine SSB
Waterway Net - 0745 EST/EDT - 7268 RX only w/o Ham license
