C-map resolution issues

So we recently got our boat and had to get a replacement chip for the B & G Zeus 2 as the one that we got with the boat was corrupt.

B&G handled this surprisingly well and got us one out ASAP.

We had the gulf of Mexico as far as we knew, n+.

What we got was M-NA-N070-MS C-MAP INSIGHT PRO-MAX-N

This served us well going from Bay St. Louis to Lake Ponchatrain (sp). But when we got into the lake area I could not keep the same level of zoom I had been using and had to back way out to see depths.

I was basically better off using NOAA maps on Open CPN on my phone.

We made it home no problems but now we want to get out and sail more. So we would like to use the chart plotter as intended.

Are we doing something wrong does this map not really cover the lake even though it does that it does?

Thanks in advance,
Gilligan

Lakes and inland waterways are often treated separately, you may not have purchased those charts.

Re: C-map resolution issues

The only argument I would have for that... assuming I'm finding the right map for what I have is... why is the line drawn WAY up past where this body of water is. It's not like I'm on the "edge". Tip of Louisiana is where we are.

Now that said, I think they changed their maps and I don't know what exactly I have.

I "enlarged" it and put a circle where the body of water in question is.

I feel like that should be covered.

I wish I knew the answer to your question, but perhaps you can get help from their support area on their website? Or find a dealer and make some inquiries? Actually a dealer might be able to provide you, a customer, a support phone number to call and get some questions answered.

That's what I was going to do next.

I just fear a LONG hold time and wanted to make sure I wasn't just crazy first.

It took me about 6 months to get my money back from them after buying the Alaska lakes chart from them which didn't even show the 5th largest lake in Alaska on it when zoomed in closer than 60ish miles, it was useless.

Just to beat this horse REALLY dead.

I fired it up on the bench here and zoomed in to where the "issue" occurs.

At one zoom level, I can see the road/bridge, I step in ONE more zoom level and the bridge goes away.

Not good.

And the depths go away on the north side of that bridge as well.

They are technically still there just not as frequently displayed if that makes sense.

I totally understand. We recently upgraded our equipment from Raymarine to B&G and I had to hold for the B&G people for an hour the first time I called. Then I think I called them on the following Monday around 10AM and got through super fast to a great technician who was super knowledgeable and helpful. He told me that there are busy and slow times and that ya never know when will be which. One call was about the wireless wind transducer and the other I think was about the connectivity I saw on the NMEA2k network.

I am on C-Map as well, since its the default system. I've been considering checking out Navionics, but the price differential is around 4x and for that it really better be better!

Re: C-map resolution issues

It wasn't too bad of a hold, I'm just worried his advice wasn't the issue.

But I understand, it's the process that has to be done.

He wants me to update everything (Zeus and C-Map card... that part I'm nervous about... C-Map has not been that great).

As I mentioned I did reach out ot B&G before and they were very helpful. Took a bit too long to find the previous owner's info as he JUST had the unit repaired. But we finally did and then after that no questions asked replaced my sd card. I was able to get it that week which was just in time for our trip.

This time was pretty good too... helped me to find all the places I needed to go to update my stuff.

Now we see what C-Map will do.

I'm curious to hear how it goes! I know I have an outstanding update on our Zeus too.

You can update your Zues by just downloading the firmware to a blank SD card (32gb or less) and insert it by itself and boot it up.

Should automatically update.

Obviously don't do this if you absolutely NEED your unit in the next week or so as if something goes wrong you don't want to be f'd in the a.

Yes! That's exactly why I had not done the update quite yet. I like to let them sit out there for a while to make sure another update does not quickly follow it. I compared the versions and its like 20.000.001 vs 20.000.002 (not a quote) but similar.

Last year when we installed everything, our vacation was literally within weeks of our wrapping up of the installation. We replaced everything except AutoPilot, thats still Raymarine. The wife wants to get the NAC3 and I'm thinking about how to connect the NMEA0183 into the NMEA2K network. She'll win, she always wins.
