Re: Best drones for boats

i have a mavic 3...

love it so far.

flight time of 40+ mins with ~9nm range on the video feed makes it an excellent scout for those unfamiliar(to me) harbors/entrances

flying single handed... i keep it simple.
i just turn into wind/heave to...and launch from deck..

..and then land on trampoline (or deck when calm)

zero issues.

Tied a 2ft shoelace to my Mini 2 with a light carabiner at the bottom. Works okay, no issues. Will use it at sea for sure.

Be real careful on retrieval. If you tell it to simply return to the start point, it's pretty likely you won't BE there.

Wear heavy welding gloves on attempting to catch a drone in the air.

Be certain as many barriers are taken down... like fishing rods...

We made a light sheet metal shroud for the monitor to make viewing easier. Also using a tablet rather than a phone.

There are Zops you can reopen. Use a big one.

Think I'd rather see a small rod hanging down. At least for some of the DJI's that will allow you to more readily hold the drone and turn it upside down where it supposedly will shut down.

We have flipped our control inputs to match our plane, but that seems to have eliminiated getting the drone to shut down when pulling the levers down and out simultaneously.

The 30cm long Zip points straight down. Same as the rod you mentioned.
It's advantage is that it can not get to the props that way.

Re: Best drones for boats

Landing on a moving boat is tricky.
I recommend setting the return to home setting to hover.
If the software crashes and it does it doesnt take off to the take off point. that could be miles away. Also keep updating the position as you go
