I'm looking to add some digital cameras to the corners to aid in docking.

I've seen several with built in audio, and night vision, but the manufacturer's helpline had zero technical information about the camera or inputs.

I need 12v DC as I'm not running a generator, and an extension cord to run a camera.

They have POE, but these are 40Vdc, and again I need a POE hub which again runs on 120VAC.

They have backup cameras for cars, but these are analog, and require either a special "backup monitor", or other analog device like a TV, or a specials adaptor that exceeds the cost of the camera.

I've ordered several cheap cameras, but they all came with weird cables that need a special adaptor.

does anyone have a solution?

They were on sale before Xmas for about $40 less than the current price and the camera works quite well, providing a live image via an iPhone app. They require a wifi connection but we have one of those on the boat (i.e. wifi internal to the boat that can be connected to an external internet connection). Using the internal wifi network connected to the internet, I can receive motion detection alerts and also see "live" video at any time from anywhere that my phone can connect to the internet.

I think that this item will work for you but suggest asking around. I also note that the batteries are good for "2 years" but the duration is likely to be less if the video function is used frequently. I received a warning from the system that it was producing too much video via the motion detection capacity so I reduced the sensitivity to avoid triggering a video of canvas flapping in the wind.

Some hubs change the voltage, some don't.


Much PoE equipment ("passive" PoE) doesn't follow any kind of standard and interoperability is poor. I've had PoE hubs in the lab that apply voltage so rapidly that they risk damaging the magnetics on connected equipment. The effects are cumulative with each power cycle.


Equipment that follows any of the standards (802.3af, 802.3at, etc) interoperates well, in my experience. (and I do this stuff for a living)

Microsemi makes two midspans, PD-9501GO/12-24VDC and PD-9001GO/12-24VDC. They accept 12-24v nominal DC input and produce standards-based PoE output (~48v). They're IP66 rated. I have not had these particular models in my lab but have had other Microsemi equipment and it's good. I don't have pricing but Microsemi tends to be expensive for what you get.

Why do you need POE? There a lot of car backup cameras with monitor for less $100 for kit just google "wireless backup camera with monitor for car". They are 12V and no need to run extra video cable.
