Re: Backstay antenna length decision

Yes, wire inside a rope cover is common. I currently have the lifeline wire and it’s working well although copper should theoretically be a bit better as it is a better conductor than stainless.

Boatguy30
is your wire enough insulated by the vinyl coating from the rigging backstay or shroud wire.?
Or does a need to stay away by a spacer?

What radio are you using. I looked in previous posting but might have missed that info.

Re: Backstay antenna length decision

David, if you are going to use wire, then the use of GTO-15 should be good enough. If you feel nervous then anything bigger, i.e. AWG10 or 8 or 6. Just make sure your connection is NOT to anything that is also grounded to AC systems. If you do that, you will need bypass capacitors to prevent corrosion.

Re: Backstay antenna length decision

David, sorry, that should read "grounded to anything using the DC grounded system". In other words, keep the ground lug of the tuner isolated from any bonded ground within the boat. It should go directly to a seawater ground plate or whatever you use for your RF ground. Nothing else should be attached to the ground.

And Merry Christmas to you and yours.
