B&G Zeus touch / Autohelm

Hi all, I have an old Autohelm 100/300 that is still working great, it has it's own flux gate compass.
I have just installed a B&G Zeus with broadband radar, and the wind vane, on the wind page, I can only get apparent wind as it has no heading info. to give true wind (I was hoping it would use the GPS )
I have it talking to the AIS ok.
Is there anyway I can get heading info. to it?
Any suggestions gratefully received!
Alex

Looking at the manual it appears the Autohelm 100/300 has true and magnetic heading on its NMEA 0183 output. I assume the Zeus has an 0183 input that you can connect the autopilot output?

Re: B&G Zeus touch / Autohelm

Further to the above, I have discovered that the AIS is using the NMEA 0183 input. Can I connect the output from the compass on to the same input, Ie: both wires together. I don't want to blow it, Alex.

You would need a multiplexer to connect two (or more) talkers to the same 0183 connection.

HDG will only give you TWA. You will need STW to get TWS.

I have a similar setup. You need the Actisense box, or a B&G Precision 9 compass. Even with that, your Autohelm will be heading hold only. It will not follow a route.

I would think you should get true wind from sog and cog. There is likly a setting for it.

Re: B&G Zeus touch / Autohelm

Thanks all, I think I am getting there, I'm not bothered about TWS.
Anyone know if I need to wire in all four wires or only the two send wires,
It's really in an awkward spot! Alex

Re: B&G Zeus touch / Autohelm

I wired all four from the AIS, so can I just "piggyback on two, or all four. Alex

Re: B&G Zeus touch / Autohelm

Do not "piggyback"; you need a multiplexer.

Download the manuals. The answers you need are in there.

Alex,

Read what people have written. They have already told you that you can not connect multiple devices to one input.

I'll say it again...YOU NEED A MULTIPLEXER.

If you cannot comprehend what is being said you should call a professional or at least find a guy in your marina that actually knows something about marine electronics.

Re: B&G Zeus touch / Autohelm

this issue is not piggy backing. you need one input for AIS and one output for compass.

the issue is both are at different speeds. and the BnG can not split port speeds for in and out. (some garmins can)

you are getting into complicated territory once you get into multiplexers.

the easiest would be to get a 183 to n2k high speed converter and feed the bng AIS via n2k. and free up the nmea 183 port for the pilot. instead of trying to multiplex the 183.

or if the AIS happens to be n2k as well.... then switch to that.

or figure out how to allow it to use COG and SOG.

Re: B&G Zeus touch / Autohelm

WRONG

You need one input for AIS at 38400 and one input for the compass at 4800.

The B&G will not do multiple speeds.(You were right about that)

There is nothing complicated about multiplexers. The Actisense NDC-4-AIS is plug and play(for this application) and the manual is one page.

Re: B&G Zeus touch / Autohelm

Alex,

Can you specify what hardware you are using?
Which Zeus?
What AIS?
What Wind Sensor?

KeelMe is correct.

Multiplexers are incredibly simple.

I do agree that if the AIS has NMEA2000 it should use it instead of NMEA0183.

Re: B&G Zeus touch / Autohelm

OK, no piggyback, I have Vesper AIS, definitely 0183, Zeus T8.
Keel me, thanks for your sarcasm, I got it now!
I am in the boonies of Malaysia, no way can I get a multiplexer here,so I'll put that project on hold, thanks guys for the constructive advice.
