There used to be an audio compass
available, which allowed blind people to helm
a course. The manufacturer stopped making these some time ago, and I understand that a plea has gone out to try to find a second hand one.
Given an electronic compass
feeding data into a computer via NMEA
, surely software
could be written using the text to speech software
and an input of desired course which would enable a blind person to experience some of the joys of sailing.
Sounds to me like a good project
that would be of great value to a section of the public who otherwise would be prevented from this sense of achievement
