Arduino and NMEA 2K hardware

A question for those that have built their own NMEA2K systems, which combination of hardware did you settle on?

Weighing up the pros and cons of Arduino vs ESP32 and whether to go with external CAN bus hardware adapters. So many choices, so darn confusing.

I’ve used both. My current favourite is the ESP as it’s much faster and currently cheaper. The RTOS operating system makes code segregation easier.

I use several different can transceivers mostly microchip ones. I’ve use TI isolated ones also.

On the Ardunio. The newer microchip 2518 is a much improved can controller over the older 2515

There are nmea2000 libraries for both cpus

Re: Arduino and NMEA 2K hardware

Well, that’s one vote for ESP32, if I read that right.

Did you run into problems with the CAN transceivers having a 120 ohm resistor that needed to be removed?
