Any Furuno GP33 Users Here ?

Hi all,

Just bought a Furuno GP33 GPS receiver.
I'm having some problems up- and downloading routes and waypoints.
Anyone here who could help me out?

I connected GPS and PC via RS232. I see the NMEA sentences coming in so the comms are ok. Point is I can't get the routes and waypoints uploaded from pc to gps. I have several gps's but this one is playing hard to get.

Hope to hear from you.

Cheers, Len.

Furuno won't up- or download

Thanks for your effort and good wishes, Gord.
I have spelled the manual and all other documentation I could find. Even if I follow the instructions exactly: no waypoints make it to the other side (I use GPSU for waypoint management). So I was thinking maybe there is another user here who got it to work. Apparently there isn't.

The previous model, GP32, works fine with UL and DL of waypoints in GPSU. I wrote to Alan Murphy, the author of GPSU. He answered:
"It is very possible that the GP32 and GP33 are different as Furuno are renowned for having different methods/formats for data transfer across their different GPSs".

More and more I'm getting the feeling there is some proprietary format being used here, forcing me to purchase Furuno software. I wrote to Furuno USA 3 days ago but I haven't had a reply yet.

This receiver is quite new. I hate it when I'm the first one to buy and then find out that: "It Doesn't Do What It Says On The Tin".
When I find out more I'll post in this thread.

Cheers,
Len. (refreining from bad emoticons )

Are you sure the GP33 accepts external routes and waypoints,( the manual mentions nothing) I was told at Southampton it didnt, but then the unit was new and the guy mightnt have known a lot about it.

Hi Dave,

The GP33 does. It was one of the features I wanted my new GPS to have besides the awesome display. As most users, I guess, I like to plan and make my routes on my PC and upload the routes and waypoints to my GPS so I won't need my PC all the time during sailing.

In the Operators Manual, chapter "7.7.1 Uploading data to a PC" and "7.7.2. Downloading data from a PC", both on page 7-13, there is a brief description. There is one problem though, it doesn't work when you follow the steps described...

This afternoon, after 3 days, I got a reaction from Furuno USA. They want me to call them and they are positive they'll help me through the necessary steps to get things working.

Well, I can't think of anything I could have done wrong or could have left out sofar, besides an unexpected software upgrade or so. But we'll see. I'll call them next monday and I'll put the results in this thread.

Cheers, Len.

GP33 up and downloading works ok

Well,

I had a nice chat with a competent and helpful tech support guy at Furuno USA. Using hyperterminal we found out what the actual format was that the GP33 uses when downloading, and expects when uploading.

My initial mistake was that I used GPSU to get the UL and DL done.
GPSU has a Furuno-setup, fi for the GP32, 35, 1650, but as Alan Murphy, the author of GPSU, told me, Furuno uses different formats in their different GPS models. By using the wrong "format / filter" I couldn't UL or DL anything.

By using hyperterminal there is no filter. There are no lines or characters that are discarded. You see the bare and complete output of the GPS when you download a set of manually entered waypoints and routes to your PC. The only tricky part is the GP33 doesn't echo the text you type on the screen in hyperterminal, so I used the "send textfile" option to upload.

So, everything is fine now.
For other GP33 users I put my test file at the bottom of this thread.
I sent this info to Alan Murphy and I hope he'll add this GP33 format in GPSU.
I also sent a message to Dave (bdbcat) so he's got the specs whenever he has time to add the GP33 to the set of gps's to send RTE/WPT files to from OpenCPN.

Cheers, Len.

Re: Any Furuno GP33 Users Here ?

Hi,

I am trying to do the same thing from Coastal Explorer but no joy. I have connect the serial port as per the manual and can see the data coming from the GPS to the PC but cannot send waypoints or routes to the GP33 either through the Coastal Explorer "Send to GPS" function or via the "I/O" menu on the GP33.

Thanks,

Max
