My conclusion is that the solution is something to play with, to learn more about radiosolutions.

Development for software defined equipment and open source is something to keep up with. There are amazing solutions developed out there. It's just a matter to put all those components together, like a DJ, in new smart pipelines.

Maybe the whole solution is illegal, but the parts is probably legal.
The "brain" -Raspberry Pi- can easily be stripped and distributed all over the boat in case of an inspection from a authority.

Whole solution is perfectly legal.... as long as you are not transmitting....

Maybe create a "stealtmode" case/box for the Raspberry hardware.
Replace a legal "case" like an old VHF-radio-bax or the box for an old AIS (rx/tx) with the smarter Raspberry SDR-RTL solution.
Then we are homefree in Chile or somewhere else...or not.

What do you want to illegally transmit at a few mW?

Interesting weather forecast radioservice to play with:

"Mscan Meteo combines the ability to decode FAX, NAVTEX and RTTY signals and view GRIB files in a single program! "
