AIS options

We are intending to add an AIS Receiver to interface with an ipad or mac notebook. We are presently running Navionics (IPAD) and CM93(MAC).
I have done some reading on GME AISR120 and a unit by Digital Yacht AIS100, but it would be good to get some feedback.
I would prefer to use the ipad/Navioncs combo. Will use a splitter to the VHF.

Any clues out there as to what works well??

Yes, the Vesper Marine XB-8000 is what you want

Thanks for the comments. The Vesper Marine XB-8000, with the wifi would certainly appeal. Does it raise an alarm if the ipod or notebook is in rest mode, or does it require constant updating to keep screen active.

I think so from reading some the testimonials. Interesting.

Vesper Marine News - Testimonials

I am sure a quick email to vesper would get a quick response.

I think it looks hot. However, it also is another display and in my experience it is often the displays that go bad first. I am sure that the iPad display will last longer... or not and then I buy a new iPad but the black box AIS is still fine.

The primary display to use is the chart plotter. This is where we also get radar and I want radar + AIS targets on one screen which a dedicated AIS can't do, so I'll probably use the NMEA output all the time and open an iPad for quick looks or while at anchor.

I need to study alarms on NMEA2000 better. Maretron displays and alarm unit do this but is it a standard and do other manufacturers integrate with that? More work for me

I recommend the XB-8000 asuming you have a chartplotter/radar that will assist. If not then the vision/touch would be the first choice.
