Adding a SECOND Garmin 740 at nav station

What are the implications of doing this? Will I need an external antenna? Should I use a newer GPS? Is this somehow a simply DIY install? I don't have much real estate to play with.
Thanks
Jim

I have both a Garmin 94SV and Standard Horizon VHF mounted below decks with built in GPS antennas and they have worked with no problems.

Kind of nice to be rid of all the external antenna mess.

GPS signals penetrate a glass deck with no issues.

I have a second plotter below deck and it is lovely. It’s connected to the system via N2K and Ethernet. Highly recommend it. No gotchas.

I wonder if it make sense to go with another GPS 740 or something newer. I only have room for another 8.5" by 5" roughly. The 740 doesn't NEED an external antenna I think. The boat is new to me and there was no one to explain anything about anything.

Jim,

The 740 has an internal antenna. It will do fine below. I use a 540 below for anchor watch. Both are NMEA 2000 so you should be able to see just about any sensor you like.

Unless you want to spend some money I’d stick with the 740. You can update charts for about $100
