yanmar engine oil removal

wondering if any one could recomend an oil removal pump (via dip stick) for a yanmar 3ym30ae. Or any other advice for removing oil.

Re: yanmar engine oil removal

I bought my pump at a mariner chandlery store and they only had one model. it is a manual pump and works fine. One thing that makes it much easier is if you warm the engine up first to make the oil more fluid. It pumps out in about a quarter of the time.

I use something like this:

Definitely warm up the oil though!

Staying with the warm oil requirement, vacuum extractors are rather pricey, but very simple and effective for this job. Here are some from Amazon; Nothern Tools has a cheaper one.

We use the WEST MARINE–Manual Oil Changer 2.9 Quart and are satisfied. Excellent suction with warm oil. A minor inconvenience is having to empty the container as it holds less than 3 quarts.

A vacuum extractor pump works well. Don't over pump it and make sure you change the oil after the engine has been run under load for about 20 minutes or more. I use one similar to this one. Look for one that seals up well so it doesn't leak oil when stored.

Re: yanmar engine oil removal

Having just done this on my 2gm, the hose that came with my cheap hand pump was too large to fit in the dipstick hole. I spliced it with a smaller hose from a siphon pump and a hose clamp. You can get one for $10 at any hardware or auto parts store.

You're also supposed to remove the filter to get the rest out, but my manual only recommends changing the filter every 3rd change or so.

I use a Manual Oil Changer from West Marine available in 2.9 and 6.9 quart capacity. Warm the engine, shut engine down, insert extractor tube down the dip stick to the bottom of the oil pan, give the extractor a few pumps and oil is automatically extracted very fast and without any mess, then transfer the oil into a separate container to drop off at an oil recycle station, replace the oil filter and refill the oil reservoir.

A feature of the Yanmar is that you can extract the engine oil out of the dipstick tube using it as the pickup {it’s not necessary to run a small diameter tube down the dipstick tube-place the intake tube of your evacuating pump over the outside at the top of the dipstick tube (dipstick removed) and pump away}.

Re: yanmar engine oil removal

The pump works great as mentioned above. On a 3gm30, I keep trying to get the dregs by moving the tube around (like getting the last bit of soda through a straw). I know this is very OCD but I keep getting a little more, pump, a little more. I just hate thinking I am mixing my new oil with too much old bottom oil...

The reason to run the engine before changing oil is to mix up any contaminants that have precipitated out while the engine sat. All that gunk will stay in the bottom of the pan if you don't run the engine before the change. The warm oil that flows better is just a nice to have feature.

Use a couple of different vacuum extractors that I've acquired over the years. Easy to use, just put the pickup tube in the oil dip stick puka, create a vacuum with the pump, and wait for that 'sucked straw at the bottom of the milkshake' sound. With everything contained in the vacuum extractor no worries about accidentally dumping oil on your boat.

I second the above. I have one of these and it works well.

Please note that the oil needs to be warmed up especially if it is cold outside or it will be like trying to suck maple syrup out of tree with a straw in mid-February...

Cheers

That never occurred to me, that's a great idea. 'Not sure if you were joking but I may try that next time.
