Thats just crazy! Nuku Hiva is a main checking in port for Marquesas. They must have been well off the beaten track for things like that to occur!

Mind you, there's areas of Perth I'd stay out of for fear of dirty deeds!

This comes as a real shock, as we met Stefan and Heike earlier this year in Guanaja. They were the adventurous types, and they spent several days at Vivorios reefs off eastern Honduras while we kept going to Providencia. I would have thought that they were far more likely to have problems in the Vivirios, where murders and piracy have occurred recently, than in Nuka Hiva, where cannibalism died out about the time Melville wrote Typee.

This is a really big jump to the conclusion that cannibals were involved. We have been to Nuku Hiva in French Polynesia...lovely place and wonderful people. We have been in that fresh waterfall-fed pond that is pictured by the OP.

Think about this...how many times in the last 10 years has anyone anywhere on this planet reached the same conclusion when charred body parts are found? Normally bodies are burned to conceal evidence.

The northern most Island in the Marquesas is called Eiao. It used to be a prison island and, other than that, has been uninhabited since raiders from Nuku Hiva ate the last native inhabitants around 1900.

Having said that, the locals we met on Nuku Hiva going on 35 years ago were all great people. Extremely friendly and out going. We spent most of our time in solo anchorages and never felt concerned about our safety. Hunted, dove and ate with the locals for nearly 5 months on Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa mostly. Think this is a situation of a single deranged individual who went off the deep end. The islands are volcanic and topsoil is shallow. You'd probably have to dismember and burn a body to have any hope of hiding it.

By all means avoid Nuku Hiva. Won't have to worry about you swinging into us in anchorages that appear to have gotten quite crowded since we were last there.

Given the few details in that article, it seems a very sensationalist conclusion to say he was "eaten by cannibals."

More likely "murdered by Henri Haiti." And if Henri turns out to have eaten some of him, it would be "eaten by cannibal," (singular) or "eaten by deranged individual."

I hope we get some more info soon to tamp down the sensationalism.

The most unusual feature on Baju is probably the `tuk tuk drive' - only in operation, if it’s really needed, since we are a sailing yacht and not a motor boat. A car diesel engine in the port side with a long shaft, like the Thai `long tail boats' or the indo Chinese freight punts, permits a speed of 6 knots.
A fantastic concept, with a couple of advantages: easily to install and repair, weight-saving since it only has one engine and not two, no typical weak points (like sail drive) and additionally the entire shaft and the propeller can be pulled out of the water without a problem. As already sailing-guru `Bobby Schenk' said: "… we cannot understand why such a simple and appropriate concept did not become generally accepted on several catamarans." It takes a little time to get used to; we think it’s perfect.

What a co-incidence! A 28-30ft cat has just come on the hard here in Bermuda with the same system. Small motor is on the bridge deck, with universal connection to shaft.
Vertical support tube pivots athwartships from top bracket, and is steered by cables thru cockpit floor.
Seeing it was definitely an "Ah-ha" moment.

I found a reference to it immediately, but nothing proven so far.

Amazing to see how quickly early reports get twisted and amplified and rumor masquerades as fact. What was originally "cannibalism can't be ruled out" has now become in the NY Daily News " authorities said they believe he was eaten by cannibals."

Apparently a German cruiser was murdered by a local and his girl friend assaulted. The tabloids in Germany are mentioning cannablism but that is highly doubtful. Here is one link I found.

There is Cannabilism in the UK nowadays

Apparently over the last few years around 400 children have been illegally brought into the UK for use in "religous" practices, the blood from various parts has differing powers . and the body parts the same. Common practice (in home country) is for the rest to go in the pot...........
