the yacht apparently hit the rocks in fog and capsized off the western cape of south Africa.

Two dead in West Coast yacht tragedy

Cape Town - A man and a woman died and a man survived when their wooden yacht ran aground in fog along the Cape West Coast early on Monday morning.

Police and rescue authorities would not name the boat or the people involved until they had informed their next of kin.

The yacht lay smashed on the rocks at Bokpunt, just north of the Koeberg nuclear power station and south of Ganzekraal resort on Monday morning, with waves crashing against the wreckage as its contents washed ashore.

The survivor, said to be an experienced sailor, suffered a gash to the head and was bleeding profusely when he reached the beach and ran to get help.

Members of State Pathology Services removed the bodies of the two deceasedon Monday morning.

All three aboard the yacht were believed to be between the ages of 50 and 70, said National Sea Rescue Institute spokesman Craig Lambinon.

“I cannot give you much detail, as we do have to make sure the families are told before they read about it in the newspapers. I can therefore not name the people or the yacht.”

According to reports, the sea was calm and there was no wind when the boat struck. It not only ran aground, but capsized as it struck, Lambinon said.

It is believed the boat was a 47-foot sloop.

“The boat is completely wrecked and lots of flotsam has washed ashore in amongst the rocks,” said Cape Argus photographer Henk Kruger who was at the scene on Monday morning.

“A portion of the stern is still visible on top of the rocks, probably about one eighth of the boat, and the waves are still breaking against it,” he said.

The yacht’s crew are believed to have family in Britain.

I hate fog when I am driving or on the water. Not only the lack of visibility but the wet clammy feeling...

Would a broadband radar have alerted them to the precariousness of their situation in time? Never used one but have been reading about them a lot lately as being cheaper to buy, run, and lower energy usage than full on radar displays...

I too took the whiskey comment in that manner.

RE Broadband, I have one, and maybe I just don't know how to tweak it, but to me it is not revolutionary, it is not much different than my old Garmin HD, I'd actually say not any better in my opinion, they both have their strong points.
My understanding is that power usage isn't that much different either, the difference I beleive is the Broadband is a constant low amp draw, while conventional Radar is a high amp intermittent draw, think strobe light vs regular light bulb.
So if you quote peak power draw it looks like a huge difference, but if you look at number of amp hours to run them, I think it's close?
I do have a little experience with Radar
