I think that all the time when I read the Washington Post.

I mean, the only credential necessary seems to be that you're of the right political party, and choose the theme accordingly.

As for workshop, insurance, etc, how much of that do you need as a writer? As for taxes, depending on the employer you'll get a W-2, just like any professional writer.

I turned down a series of articles involving a year long expedition I did because I found their offer of .20 cents CAD a word too low.

Let's see...about 38,000 well researched and edited posts at an average of 50 words per post is 1.9 million words that Gord has contributed to CF. At the OP's rate, we owe him over fifty grand.

Re: Would like to hire some one to write a sailing article

Absolutely. I earn my living producing documentary films. Each film entails 50-100 pages of textual content in the form of research and script. For that and the audio-visual narrative I deliver my compensation is several thousand dollars. The operative word here being several. The conceptual labour is similar in that a story must be framed and composed. A magazine offering a couple hundred bucks for what will inevitably take the better part of a week to do properly is either looking for a quality of work I’m not interested in producing, or a genius who can pump out good copy in a couple of hours. Either way I’m not the right guy.

You only get a W-2 if you're an employee. By definition freelancers aren't employees. So if you are a staff writer someplace you might get one, but for those of us writing multiple small jobs for multiple clients, no.

You'll get a 1099, maybe, if you get paid over the threshold. Compliance with this is spotty, and if you're working for a foreign client don't expect one. But you need to report it, and you'll pay self employment tax (double FICA payroll withholding, less 1%) on your net income.

You also need to make quarterly income tax payments if you incur a large enough tax liability, as nothing will be withheld from the pay you get for subcontracted work. Otherwise you may incur penalties.
