Would a "stolen" forum be useful?
Would it be useful to have a "stolen Boats and Gear" forum down there with the boats for sale?
I ask because I've just had my dinghy stolen in Portland Oregon and I recall that the pro audio forums I used to frequent has a stolen gear section.
And of course I'm trying to deal with the theft.
Just asking.

I wouldn’t mind this. I have had tons of stuff stolen over the last decade. I have been trying to figure out where they are selling it afterward. Maybe they are just using it.
I scoured craigslist looking for my stuff every time and didn’t find it. I looked on eBay also.

Probably ends up on a table at a flea market would be my guess. Anything to limit public exposure. They want to sell it not get crucified. That is my theory anyways, there are always the dumb thieves posting it on craigslist the same or next day though, so doesn't hurt to look.

Re: Would a "stolen" forum be useful?
I think it's a great idea. I sometimes see ads/articles about stolen dinghies and such on Latitude 38, our local magazine that's gets published/disseminated widely. I've always thought this might make someone think twice about trying to sell hot goods locally, which means they'd have to work harder to peddle the merchandise to an out-of-town buyer. So with CF being global, then we'd all become those aware "out-of-towners" a thief might dread.

Re: Would a "stolen" forum be useful?
I'd be interested as long as it's geographically split up. I probably wouldn't look through 30 listings from all over to see if my location was mentioned. A good idea.

Re: Would a "stolen" forum be useful?
This is an international forum and as such the setting up of a geographically delineated specialist subset is quite daunting and difficult to manage.
we will keep looking but logistically perhaps not helpful.

Sometimes a stolen dingy is found floating or drifting and is recovered - without the outboard. The target is usually the outboard and not the dingy. Always chain up the outboard. Or chain lock the dingy and the outboard with two separate chains and locks.
I use good chain and make the chain easy to see.

Re: Would a "stolen" forum be useful?
For sure hard to make it work by region.
I was thinking more along the lines of a world wide single forum and let the search function work on serial numbers. Like:
Stolen dinghy Serial number XDC1K960B626 Zodiac Cadet 310 AL 2016
Of course a long shot.
In my case doing all the local searches (craigslist and such)
The motor was off and still in storage for the winter, The boat had a stainless cable cut clean through. Big cutters... It appears that they also cut through the fence to get into the marina.

Re: Would a "stolen" forum be useful?
I think it would be quite easy to create sub-forums like in "destinations".
Surely you could have West USA, East USA & then country by country?
Maybe split EU up a bit as well?
I can't see a need for town, city or locality though.

Re: Would a "stolen" forum be useful?
Why don’t people use those small locator devices that are well hidden on dingies and outboards? Like a LoJack device! Would those devices work in other continents other than N America? Certainly cheap enough.
Secondly guys and gals.... with all the unemployed I think extra diligence might be required for those who are seriously challenged financially during Covid debacle.
