wireless radar

My JRC combo radar / plotter finally quit after 15 years of faithful service.
we don't sail as far as we used to and now have a useful AIS device .
and several newer plotters so no longer need the dual capability.
I'm thinking of replacing with the Furuno First Watch wireless radar..?
does anyone have first hand experience of these units. ?. reviews online are mixed and not many are recent .
I'd be grateful for any input .
thanks

Re: wireless radar

I helped somebody hook up the Raymarine Wifi connected radar. The biggest problem that I saw is that you probably will need a dedicated WiFi display device, since most tablets will only connect to a single WiFi source. If you’re going to put the display at the helm, that means a waterproof case and a permanent power source. The radar scanner still needs power cables, so the extra size and weight of the Ethernet wire is insignificant.

So I can’t see that the whole idea of WiFi connecting to the radar is a useful idea, especially if you have to buy a plotter/MFD anyway and run new power cables.

But I’m one of the old luddites that won’t trust iPads, of which I have several, as my primary navigation system.

Re: wireless radar

thanks for the reply.. I agree, I wouldn't think of using any tablet device ..or laptop for that matter, as my primary navigation aid.
I'm pretty old school myself and love to see a paper chart with crosses penciled in.
the installation of a new radar is almost a case of ' I have a radar arch so i might as well put something on it" and there's been a time or two when I've been glad to have some 'eyes' on a foggy day or a black night.
just trying to see what people who have used the wireless Furuno actually think of this simple unit.
