Re: Why are there few high-weight Cruiser Folk?

When we cruised the Marshall Islands I got to know a local Dr. quite well and one of the questions I asked him was what disease was the most common in the tropics and he said, easy by a high margin, kidney stones. People simply did not drink enough water.

Funny enough the only time I have ever suffered from kidney stones was while living in London for a few years way back.. the pain was so intense I thought I was going to die then I passed out.. never before or since.
I don't/very rarely drink water neat.. mixed with instant coffee and sugar a lot.. or with hops.. a bit..

I agree with comments on boat motion.

Food is an interesting one... Many still conform to government food guidelines where most recent research (except that funded by coke and food manufacturers) shows carbs are not as good as previously thought and meat and fat are better than previously thought.

Read up, it's all on the internet. Links to quality research on www.dietdoctor.com

Yep, I've been persuaded of the diet research. I've changed my decades long dietary habits a bit and started eating butter again, yum. Quite a scary change. Even worse than regular carbs though is sugar and alcohol (beyond a couple a day). So cookies and chocolate is out. Bummer. Alcohol won't be stopped, even to excess now and then. I don't actually want to live to be really old. It's not fun for most really old crocks.

It's true being on the boat keeps you thinner. It's much more active for me than being at my desk in the office all day. Continually contorting my body doing things like repairing a hose clip under the engine. It's a work out every day.

It's also true that overweight people can't manage and will be put off. I know at least one guest who enjoyed it a lot less because of the physical struggle. She was really unsafe on her feet.

Re: Why are there few high-weight Cruiser Folk?

Do you mean extremely obese?

I think this can be because sailing requires a minimum level of fitness.

But otherwise, I think obesity is at least as common among cruisers as it is is among landlubbers. Maybe you cannot see it this much where you live, but it is very clear in rich Europe and even more so in even richer US.

Very many of our friends are seriously obese, most cruise, fewer sail.

So, my observations seem to be just the opposite of yours. You are living in a good spot!

I agree with you, on average the North American sailors are overweight, maybe not obese but not far off it.

Vitamin D may contribute to weight loss.
Humans make vitamin D with sunlight.
Comes from the theory that leading to winter,
weight is put on with less sunlight and
in spring weight is shed with more sunlight.
Boaters probably get more vitamin D.

I watch how some of our fellow cruisers eat and drink and believe me vitamin C would not make any difference. Many of them spend upwards of 500 bucks a month on booze.

Being an overweight sailor back in the day did have it's advantages.

Why do you think so many Pacific Islanders are a bit heavy/overweight?

Yep that's about right for these days but back in the day when the islanders were sailing to parts unknown, the folks that had the lower metabolism and higher fat content were the ones that could survive the longest without food or with very little food for weeks on end.......the skinny folks were the first to die on these voyages

This is the reason many experts say pacific islanders naturally have more fat content......

High weight cruiser?

You mean like FAT?

Or is that not sufficiently PC?

Perhaps because they rank high on the BMI?

Lack of exercise + meat & sugars high diet = the same result Berlin or Papeete.
