You will need to protect your iPad from the weather - but I agree that the iPad is an AWESOME toy. Imagine sitting in a marina bar somewhere, talking about a favorite anchorage - you could just whip out the iPad - you carry your charts with you. I feel about my iPad like I did about my very first cell phone - how did I ever survive in the world without this thing?!

I've been using a Standard Horizon CP 180i for several years and am very happy with it. It's size made it easy mount at the helm:

With it's internal antenna I even get sat signals in the cabin. They may have updated models since I bought mine but, the 180i has never failed me. Well within your budget too.
