Where to register a boat

I am a British citizen, residing in Canada and just purchased a us coast guard registered boat that is in panama. What is the easiest way to register the boat
Oh I am in panama with the boat and the current owners are in Florida
Should I register it in Britain? Canada? Or has anyone registered their boat in a different country?
Thanks

If you have a UK address... or the use of one (parents for example)... the UK SSR is the easiest and cheapest... and you can do it on line...
Its renewable every 5 years and simplicity itself...

The owners of the vessel should also prepare a USCG Bill of Sale (Form CG-1340), which will notify the USCG that the boat has been sold and remove the US Documentation.

You will have to prove to whoever you register it with to that the boat has been removed from the files of the USCG Documentation Center.

You can register it as a Canadian vessel. About $350 if I remember right. If the vessel is under 12 metres no need for a tonnage survey. Just a few photos. As long as you don't bring the boat into Canada no sales tax, HST etc.

It's 38 ft so it's over 12m what's involved in a tonnage survey ? It's in the water and no lift around.

No, 38 feet is under 12m. (11.58m) I registered my 39 footer with the short form (no tonnage survey). A tonnage survey measures the interior volume of the vessel, no need to haul the boat but you will not need a tonnage survey.

Your boat, 12 m, is over 38 feet. 1 m = 3.2808 ft

Im sure there are Agencys in Panama, that can register your boat in a great many places! I would ask a local broker for the name of a local agency that do this type of thing ! I know theres many in the US and other countrys !

Re: Where to register a boat

You can't Document it with the US Coast Guard unless you are a US citizen. It is true that you need to have it removed from Documentation, but I believe the owner whose name is on the document has to do that for you. Here's a link. You could potentially register it in someplace like Florida if you wanted to keep it there, but you would need a Florida address. US state registration, like in Florida, is fine throughout the USA, but can be problematic entering some countries. I would suggest checking into Panama registration with the folks at Shelter Bay Marina--I expect there is someone there who could put you in touch with someone who knows what to do. You won't want to go far without have a clear document in your name showing you own the boat. That is the first thing they check when entering other countries--even more so than your passports, which I find they just glance at. Maybe UK registration would be easier.

Thanks for all the info, it looks like Canada is my best bet as I have no desire to sail there, I would like to sail to the EU one day thus I can avoid taxes, panama is too expensive, Canada is $250 for 5 years and no tax is payable if the vessel doesn't enter Canada
Thanks again everyone

When did they change this? I've owned three Canadian registered boats. One initial fee is forever unless they've changed it recently. You used to get a "blue book" but now all you get is a piece of yellow paper. When they changed over to this about ten years ago I thought it was the thin edge of the wedge to eventually get to annual renewals or something like that but I've received no notice that the fee has changed.

Got this from transport Canada website

A Certificate of Registry is valid for a period of three (3) years. A Renewal Certificate of Registry is issued to the owner or the owner's authorized representative 30 days prior to the expiration date. In the event that the Renewal Certificate of Registry is not received at least two weeks prior to the date of expiration, it is important to immediately contact the Registrar at your Port of Registry, as a valid Certificate of Registry must be kept on board the vessel at all times.

It shows 3 years???

But you only have to pay once! There is no fee for renewal. Every three years they send you a new registration certificate.
