Re: What's usual for hailing port?

I was once temporarily tied in a lock behind a vessel with Key Largo posted as the hailing port. As we had spent much time on both the ocean and the bay side of Key Largo, I asked the owner where he kept his boat. Key largo only has about half a dozen marina dock areas and limited moorings so I assumed we shared some friends and experiences.

I was surprised and disappointed when he told me that he and his boat had never been to Key Largo. He told me that he simply thought that the name looked good on his boat! 'just doesn't seem right!

Kyle, South Dakota is the spot in the lower 48 that is farthest from the ocean...

Re: What's usual for hailing port?

Used home port on documented boats, current vessel state registered but started in San Francisco and had that hailing port. For sentimental reasons on the part of my wife it remains, but I do get teased about when I'm going to "correct" it. Logic to me is home port, no matter where you are you left from somewhere, right ?

Put whatever you want on your boat, me, I'll put my home port "Seattle" and I'll put the "Wa." on my return mail address, not on my boat.

Seems that few of those places are actually port cities, and by the way, I don't see Boston, Ma on your list.

Using your list as justification to toss out nautical tradition is even stupider than I thought.

Re: What's usual for hailing port?

Although there is no regulation convention is that you use either your home town or the home port.

Urban myth. No such "convention" exists. More like invention.

If that is the case then the convention is dumb.

The home port is the port of the vessel, not of the owner

This is about the boat, it is not about you

New (to me) boat now has a hailing port of Paradise, AK just to be different. CG is happy as long as my letters are 4" tall.

Re: What's usual for hailing port?

Of course the CG is happy, they just want another word (city, state, etc) to distinguish the boat from others with the same name.

As far as I am concerned we should just put up a big billboard on the side of the boat with the owner's happy faces and their pertinent details so everyone who sees the boat knows their nationality, where they used to live, and everything about them. Kind of like big name tags.

Aside from the CG requirement for documented vessels, the hailing port is a matter of nautical tradition which few people even know about and there are fewer who could care at all.

It's like flying the flag of your country on the stbd flag halyard in place of the courtesy flag.

For state registered vessels, of course, you don't have to put anything. For USCG documented vessels, however, the law REQUIRES you to include the state, or territory. So, at least as far as documented vessels, the above is absolutely wrong!

Of course that is true, but it does not make it right.

You are the stupid one.

If having a home port listed has any value at all, surely disambiguation has value.

And I didn't claim my list was comprehensive, only rebutting your stupidity at saying it was stupid.

So you use convention to call me stupid, and then in a late post disparage the convention.

Pretty stupid I'd say. Are you posting drunk again?

Again, Not a requirement for State registered boats, but for Coast Guard Documented boats, the two letter state abbreviation is a requirement.

If I were putting a hailing port on a state registered boat, personally, I'd follow the Coast Guard regulations. I wouldn't want the CG to assume I was a documented boat and pull up alongside for a talk because my hailing port lettering wasn't done right.
