TOO few! Too few!

Life is inherently dangerous, mate.

Is sailing more dangerous than say driving a car?

Boating Accident Statistics

Man, 1/10 of the rate for biking!

Too bad I could not find the stats for sitting in an armchair ;-)

Couldn't open the bikeworld stats..but like what many are NOT addressing in this thread.... there is a HUGE difference in sailing around a bay on a nice day and serious cruising across oceans or sailing in all sorts of serious weather.

Sort the stats differently and I'm sure the numbers get closer.

Learning all the aspects of modern boat management (???) is ... learning all the aspects of modern boat management.

Hitting the engine start button when things get rough is, more often than not, panicking.

I specifically " modern boat managent " to refer to the techniques that are used to a modern production yacht over significant using modern navigation, seamanship appropriate to the vessel, communications, equipment maintenance. Etc

All a bit different from kerosene running lights

Yep - sailing on the bay is likely more dangerous than crossing an ocean: on the bay you have the other boats, the rocks, etc. to 'interact' with.

Life is dangerous, especially in childhood, the middle- and old age.

PS No need to sort things differently, mate: biking is 10x more accident-likely than sailing PER 100.000 registered craft. Also, 75% of all boat accidents happen on small, power craft with the offender/victim drunk or not wearing the pfd.

I think we both agree that driving a rib while drunk and without a pfd is a bad idea. And otherwise sailing is a pretty safe activity.

To clarify the definition of 'sailing', it must be what sailors do, although it's hard to think of myself as sailing while I'm slapping on bottom paint...

ss--glad ye like it-- there is a lot more, but only so much room in which to post the stuff of which to fear so much ye dont leave your home-- agoraphobia is a fear of leaving home-- what is name of fear of leaving dock...there are many who strive to ready a boat -- for many many decades just to never leave at all.....one excuse after another boiled down to abject fear. is a sad thing to watch.

To quote FDR, "we have nothing to fear but fear itself". Ain't nobody gettin out of here vertical so go for it. I've always done things friends & family thought was too dangerous, raced sports cars, high performance sport bikes, exploring remote desert areas in a 4x4, hang'n out with bad people in worse neighborhoods, drink'n too much, smoked 3 packs a day, terrible diet etc. Many of those who tried to save me are 6ft. under & I've had a lot more fun. Now I want to go bluewater sailing singlehanded and guess what they're saying, "aren't you afraid"? No I'm not!

too much fear keeps dock lines intact and attached to a boat.
