Re: What Ever Happened to Learn by Doing ? Read a Book and Go for it !

Classes in whatever you want to learn is great. The problem arises when someone takes, say, an ASA101 class and goes out thinking they know much more than in reality they do.

IT'S NOT WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW THAT WILL KILL YOU

IT'S WHAT YOU KNOW THAT IS WRONG THAT WILL.

I don't think so. Last time I saw something like that Capt James T. Kirk was firing a photon torpedo at it.........

.....but whatever, if I saw that coming out of the dark I would probably sh#t myself - as per page 112 of the ASA training manual

No. 'Twas my last attempt at decorating a Christmas tree.

Re: What Ever Happened to Learn by Doing ? Read a Book and Go for it !

..as a bfi (basic flight instructor) for 26yr.Ive had folks that had double doctorates that could not comprehend the basics of flight, Ive seen others that had minimal education take off from a 2500 ft. mnt. and thermal out of site with a few lessons.all about the individual, maybe the guy would do ok without lessons, maybe not. if one has worrys about inate abilitys one should get training.not everyone learns the same way...some visual..some by listening...others by doing..decide which you are and go for it... but by all means go for it good luck, DVC

That does not include over a dozen trips around Vancouver Island, about half of which is offshore, but does include Turkey, BVIs , The Bahamas, The Leewards and the PNW. I have also crewed on race boats (actually that is where I got started.)

As an instructor-evaluator, I tell prospective instructors that they have to have had a lot of experience and made a lot of mistakes before they can impart their knowledge and skills to others.

In another forum, we ran some quizzes to test each other's knowledge, who is game for that here?
And I took offense at someone who said that anyone who doesn't go for YM offshore is scared of failing... Touche

That definitely seems to be the way with scuba courses. After one course there is a dose of paranoia for having to do the next. Before you know it you have paid another couple of hundred bucks and bought some waterproof diapers so that you are qualified to fart underwater.

As far as boats are concerned, over here in Australia I have only had exposure to commercial orientated seaman course such as those offered by the TAFE in Hobart, which are excellent. Still, I get the vibe that some of the more consumerist yachting course might be going down the same road as the scuba stuff; probably why I have not seriously investigated these options. In this case, I would rather just spend my dollars on good first hand accounts of the renowned circumnavigators etc
