Aren't you supposed to break a bottle of Champagne on the deck?

Most people have been much more serious and come up with some really worthwhile advice, almost scary in fact, so much work. But I do agree it is really important to familiarise oneself with the intimates of the boat. Hauling out all the accumulated detritus of years and checking out all the modifications of the previous owner(s) is probably the essential first step.

The intimates with the boatmate can come anytime.

Yeah but intimates with the first mate are way more fun than intimates with the boat.

Wish I had thought of doing that first - LOL

Re: What Was First Thing You Did In Your New Boat

Our boat was absolutely shipshape. The only thing that needed repair was a light bulb that needed changing (the previous owners were fanatics about keeping the boat the way a boat needs to be kept.) The boat was 6 years old and looked like it had just hit the water, new from the factory.

First thing - Gave the assistant skipper a long kiss, threw off the docklines and sailed our new baby home.

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

Ripped out all the crappy work done by the original owner! Spent days ripping out bad wiring jobs and trashed equipment and junk...by the wheel barrow load!

The guy who boat the boat from me...sure got a sweet deal.

I personaly made the bed then left on a 7 day vertualy non stop sail to deliver it to my home marina in southern Spain. Certainly the best way to get to know a new boat by throwing myself in at the deep end!

vacuumed 26 yrs of dirt out of her then slept then went to work. in the process of moving into boat i picked up a stalker---not fun for a few years...was the neighbor across dock from me. took 7 yrs to get the stalker to leave me alone, and then life began in earnest.....

If it is a new boat, name it.

If it is a new to you boat (pre-owned), de-name it so you can then re-name it.

Re: What Was First Thing You Did In Your New Boat

The first thing I did with my first boat was to wade out and tie a rope to the bow ring and drag her out of the water from where she was sunk.

My second boat, I poured a tot of Rum for myself and another for the Sea Gods.

First thing I did was to move her to her me dock. There she got an oil change, new filter, belt and transmission fluid. I then addressed the 1-2 critical issues from the survey.

After that, I sailed her often. Moving up to this size boat, I drilled myself on raising sails, reefing the main, all those things I never had to do Ina kayak. Oh yeah, for a former kayaker, the best was using a real head!!!

Try not to dwell on the admiral's concerns too much, get out and have fun!

Re: What Was First Thing You Did In Your New Boat

Found a couple of bottles of cheap plonk in a locker that the PO had missed. Chilled the white one and drank the red one while I waited.

Agreed on the junk aboard bit. While drinking the red I filled 7 large garden sized trash bags full of the PO's crap and tossed it all in a dumpster. Then I celebrated some more by opening the white.

So far as I can remember it was a productive day.
