What are these things?

Hello all!
I’m working on an older Tartan. Great boat. I’ve found some random items on board and wonder if you can tell me their purpose. Photos attached. Thanks!

Re: What are these things?

Only guessing on the 1st pic w/the brown wood circles, but appears to be a plug of some sort for a circle cut out on your boat. The stick bungee keep it in place.

#2 is a vang attachment for an old roller boom
#3 no clue!

What other treasures have you found on your boat? Also what did you buy??

#1 likely correct!
#2 I agree. vang or heaven forbid sheet. Get rid of it and go to slab reefing if the main is not set that way already
#3 oh my.

For #2 can still do slab reef, but don't need to get rid of vang hardware on your round boom. Had one of these on a previous boat, it will work well and can move it on the boom for better placement.

Re: What are these things?

Thanks for your help!
I live in Vermont, along Lake Champlain. Last summer I bought a Tartan 27 - hull #87, built in 1968, I think. I sailed it through the fall, and already looking forward to getting back on the water.

Re: What are these things?

Looking at #3 again, it does look like a main head board from an old sail. Not sure why one would have it unless the sail was totally destroyed or were going to rebuild a sail.

Re: What are these things?

I think #3 is a headboard for a mainsail. #1 ???

Re: What are these things?

#1 I'm also going to go with plugs for something. Guessing the cord attached between the plug and stick is elastic. You would insert the stick through the hole, pull the plug tight and turn the stick to keep the plug tight in the hole.

#2 is called a "boom claw", typically used in reefing systems where the main was rolled up on the boom. The claw slides over the end of the boom with the sail in the slot between the rollers. A block is attached to the shackle and the sheet goes through the block. As there are no attachments on the boom, you are free to roll up the mainsail, on the boom, inside of the claw. Sounds good - but in practice, it takes a long time to roll up the main to shorten sail, and the rollers on the claw wear on the mainsail fabric.

#3 No idea.

The thing with the metal shaft and black and yellow handle is a phillips screwdriver.

Re: What are these things?

I think a better description for item #3 would help. Particularly what material it is made of. How thick is it? Is that a small shackle at the pointy end? If not, what is it? Dimensions? Do any of the holes or edges show "load wearing" abrasion.
If it is a standard off the shelf product it may have a brand name or product number on it. That would help a lot. Or is it fabricated?
Is the corner near your hand actually 90 degrees or is it less. This may help confirm its previous life as a sail headboard.

My mum usually described such mysterious objects as "a wigwam for a goose's bridle" . This just may be one of those things.

Also the screw driver is clearly one of those special left hand ones. Store it in a special left handed tool box. Also, it may well be a Phillips screwdriver, but the authors name appears to be Dug. So he probably unearthed it! It seems then to be a "Dug screwdriver". Here to help.

A brief message to Dug. Ask Liz. Girls have all the answers.
