Re: Whale lands on vessel

A whale thrusted from the waters off the coast of Australia over the weekend and came crashing down on top of a small fishing boat, critically injuring an 18-year-old man and his 39-year-old stepfather.

Nick Myhill suffered severe head and neck injuries [he’s in a coma] in the freak incident Sunday in the Tasman Sea, off Narooma, on the southern coast of New South Wales, according to reports.

"Reporter" could talk a bit slower so you can understand him!

Yes, big news here in Oz. Very rare considering the number of humpbacks we see each year.

Re: Whale lands on vessel

Another tragedy involving an animal just being itself around human beings. I doubt the "white whale" hypothesis. Just a whale being a whale. They leap, they land, and this time someone gets hurt.

Is the whale all right? Clearly a tragedy for the people, but I'm sure landing on a boat does the whale no good as well.

Not a 'right' whale, but a 'humpback'.

Re: Whale lands on vessel

Whales go through childhood and adolescent phases just like we do.

I suspect there's a pretty good chance that this was some form of "Hey Moby, I *dare* you to jump over that boat! You scared bud? Chicken?" "Nah bro, I can absolutely clear that, hold my krill and watch this!"

Re: Whale lands on vessel

And now begins the parade of land-lubber newb's to over discuss 'Whale Deterant' systems and 'whale deflection tactics'. (I need a blue water boat, with forward looking sonar and crash bulkheads for containers, and a sky shield for whales, and possibly a second (get home) engine. It needs to be 90 feet, because we like to cruise around the world with a lot of family and friends)

In fact there is at least one white humpback whale that has been cruising up the east coast of Australia the past 10 or so years. It has been named Migaloo. So far this year it does not seem to have been sighted.

A blind whale then. Probably has a better developed sonar navigation system than an average whale.
