Watermaker - Are you Planning to Have One?
Watermakers - for long term cruising do you have, or are you planning to have, a watermaker? (answer the poll please).
Not really looking for a debate on "need" as even I admit there probably isn't a need. But it is hard to argue that it doesn't make cruising more enjoyable. Even on my current normal weekend cruising locally I find getting water a huge pain in my rear end.
With a 15-gph system only costly $2000 for a basic system the cost isn't an issue as compared to a lot of stuff people get out of fear it is cheap.

Don't have one yet but do plan to acquire a manual emergency model.

Yes, when I have the need, which won't be for awhile as I won't go full time for awhile

"Cockpit Potatoes" like us are never to far from fresh water. We'll pass on the watermaker because we are going to the town dock for beer, groceries, laundry, and snacks anyway.
Oh, and a special thanks to Tomfl for the Dan Quayle potato plural spelling tutorial!

I sure would like one, but it isn't in the budget as of now. I'd love to hear some more info about DIY, though.

Re: Watermaker - Are you Planning to Have One?
The problem with hauling water from shore is that it is very heavy.
I heard there is some new dehydrated water powder that should solve this problem.

Except for George Town Ihe Exumas wirh that pesky low dinghy bridge, my 4'3" draft usually allows me to get my boat close enough to the water source.

Re: Watermaker - Are you Planning to Have One?
Our watermaker has greatly improved the quality of our life while cruising. Not only does it give us a reliable source of of excellent-tasting fresh water, especially in remote Third World countries but it gives us the freedom to plan our destinations without having to be concerned about how much water we have or use.
I installed our Spectra Cape Horn model five years ago and it has worked flawlessly, consistently producing 14+ gallons per hour.
Fair winds and calm seas.

Re: Watermaker - Are you Planning to Have One?
I only posted the question as on another site it was suggested that the majority of people didn't install watermakers. But I have the feeling that they are more installed than some expect.
