Re: VINTAGE ROBERTSON EGERSUND NORWAY BINNACLE NAUTICAL COMPASS
More than likely it's a vessels spare gimbaled binnacle compass.
SOLAS vessels above 150gt are required to carry a spare boxed gimbaled binnacle compass as part of SOLAS requirements.
The box is for protection only until it is required to replace the vessels installed compass, it's not meant to be used in the box and needs to be swung when fitted to the binnacle...
I wouldn't have a clue as to it's value but it would be worth more with the binnacle.

thanks, yes would need to have room to swivvel and move . could be right about the back up. but would also come in a box if you oreded a replacement also. its incredible how something that old still works a charm, swivvels and spins. when i was trying to find a thread on one. many had complained about there compass leaking. but this old girl still does all she needs.

If it works, clean it up and use it. Or you could have it in a display case in a house. Personally, I'd mount it on the boat, at the helm or inside.. Just use it. Call around for any compass shops in the country and they may be able to give you info on it.

You wouldn't know if it works correctly (accurately) until it's in it's correct binnacle and swung, the box it's in is for transport and storage only.....

Of coarse the box is for storage and transport. i tested it against another compass, still finds north . the box actually allows the compass to pivot and move. turned in 90* degree movements, found north everytime. price is double for you. haha
