Re: Twelfth Step lost near the Marqueses?

I feel sorry for the dog. As the old saw goes, losing one boat can happen to anyone, but losing two is beginning to look like carelessness.

Perhaps but lets not forget Bernard Moitessier lost 3 boats .
Not suggesting there is any other comparison here!

No Idea about that. We arranged his evacuation in the N Atlantic in 2008 off a boat called PHOENIX. Just wondering if it was the same guy.

Hmm? Now let me see....how many sea miles did Bernard sail?

Funny comparison I know but....I've lost several cars to accidents, over the last 50 years of driving. None of the losses were my fault. Perhaps sometimes the number of miles you do just catches up with the laws of average---who knows? But in THIS guys case???

Just might be. I don't remember the details but I know he said he had an incident in the N Atlantic once and the USCG asked him to abandon but he would not get off the boat. They threatened to charge him with some bad felony but he stayed aboard. He said he made it to Italy where he lost the boat and I never understood why. I am guessing it was a salvage now.

This makes me wonder if I should not have sold him the boat! I found him a boat capable of the voyage that he could afford. I gave him good advice to prepare and he was in the marina for several months doing something. I am wondering if there is a point where a yacht broker should not sell someone a boat they came half way around the world to purchase?

By the way his name is not Pavel but similar. Email me off forum as I don't want to post his name.

Having these abandoned yachts drifting at sea is a bit of a worry when you are sailing offshore at night. You would not want to hit one of them in the dark and damage or sink your own yacht.

I agree but hitting a vessel approximately the same size is the last thing I would be worried about. It's the stuff you don't see that scares me. If I was sailing to Hawaii right now, I would worry more about the Japan Tsunami flotsam.

There are plenty of things to hit: Whales, logs, containers, Japanese nuke plants, flotsam. But if you bought lottery tickets for a chance to hit them, only one in a zillion would actually make contact. I mean, you're worried about a 100 foot target in the middle of the ocean?

Must have installed the new diesel/electric teleportation system. Remember, you need to reef for Mars.
