Travel dilemma

We have a boat on the East Coast, an RV in Colorado, a trip to Mexico, and we're chartering in the BVIs. We're leaving Colorado for Mexico because it's too cold to stay here. After Mexico we're picking up our boat before it freezes in the Chesapeake. Then we will store the boat in Florida and fly to the BVI charter. Then back to Colorado next summer. How the heck do you manage luggage between all of these places? Duplicate everything, everywhere? What do you do? or how did we get into this mess?

I have clothes and tools everywhere.

My folks drag their stuff back and forth.

We're not quite as complicated, but have learned to be quite mobile with our stuff.

We have our boat in Newfoundland (which is home). But we spend the cold months house sitting or motorcycling around the continent. For this we use our little Honda Fit as the mobile base. Everything we need for winter life and travel has to fit in the Fit.

We each have a small duffle bag of clothes. This is supplemented with a smaller bag of winter garb since we mostly stay in Canada for the cold months. The car carries a small compliment of tools, along with necessary bedding, tents, and basic kitchen items, including plates, bowls, cutlery, spice wrack and of course, wine glasses.

We carry a couple of small portable coolers to make travel more affordable. And that's about it. With this we can live comfortably, and fairly independently, on or off the boat.

That's what I was thinking. Clothes everywhere. I duplicated tools already.

We pretty much use the same clothes on or off the boat, with the addition of a couple extra fleeces for winter on land. Tools are pretty basic in the car compared to what's on board. And we also transfer our basic galley needs from the boat. So we're not duplicating too much.

If we had an RV, or land home, I bet we would have complete duplicates.

Mexico seemed very safe.

It makes a real difference WHERE in Mexico. We felt very safe in La Paz (and Sea of Cortez), as well as in Mazatlan. I don't think cruisers frequent so much the "unsafe" areas. (I've not met any who felt unsafe on their boats on the west coast of Mexico.)

Are you flying from Mexico straight to the Chesapeake?

I have a habit that I don’t others would follow. Pack old clothes that can be left behind. Doing this means that you look rather shabby when on vacation but you can return home with a light load.

The delivery to Florida and then on to a charter should be easy as you’d be able west the same thing into BVI.

My parents retired to Cozumel; I always felt safer there than in the US...
