Re: Too much old content on CruisersForum

When I'm looking for something on CF, I will commonly just use google. If you type the below in Google:

site:cruisersforum.com "marine toilet"

Using the 'site:' command followed by the top webpage URL will limit you to just searching CF. It works pretty well when the build-in search is confused or has limit on the word length of a common term.

YMMV

Re: Too much old content on CruisersForum

OP's request is akin to someone asking a librarian to purge Mark Twain from the library shelves " 'cause it was written 100+ years ago".

Seeing no follow up posts from OP methinks it's SA troll or somesuch.

Re: Too much old content on CruisersForum

Silly discussion. There is so much old content that is of value for one reason or another that deleting it, given the nearly non-existent cost of keeping it, is counter-productive.

As others have noted, learn to use proper search tools well and it isn't an issue. If you are looking for something new then limit the date range appropriately, but some old info is gold.

Reviving old threads is a different matter. It might seem that locking threads after some years would make sense but it misses one big point: it alerts a group of people that have shown interest in the topic in the past that someone has something new to say. If starting a new thread many relevant members may not see it. The important point is that old threads should be revived only when there is something that is really worthy or needing the attention of that many members, and not just a cute remark which might pass with a current thread. Netiquette...

I have noticed recently that a number of threads just a few years old have been revived, and appropriately so. It means that the poster has done his search first, before starting a new thread. This is far better than the alternative, which is members starting new threads without searching first, resulting in a proliferation of near-identical threads. I would very much like to see more members search first before starting new threads - there's a lot of good information already here that doesn't need to be endlessly repeated.

Re: Too much old content on CruisersForum

No changes, please. I don't think there are enough necro-threads to matter. And sometimes the person has a new question. The others are easy to click past.

Re: Too much old content on CruisersForum

As others have noted, I have relatively old boats, and I frequently come across old CF threads via Google and other search engines that are super helpful. The historical data including ideas and opinions regarding how to fix, upgrade, replace or abandon something have been invaluable for me.

I'm also a big fan of seeing old threads come back to life because the information in them is relevant to someone looking for help. I often find these very useful as well when I discover that someone has had the same problem or wondered the same thing many years after the original post.

This forum is invaluable, because of its participant's willingness to share knowledge, and the wealth of information contained in existing threads. Governments and smart organizations spend a great deal of money creating and maintaining archives. The archival value of CF is significant and should be preserved.

Wow! Thanks for reminding me that there was such a treasure chest full of information dating back to ?? Don't remove this valuable history. I look forward to going back many years (decades) to search out questions I have.
cheers,
Jim

Re: Too much old content on CruisersForum

I hope they leave the content there.
There are some "classic" old posts and threads that are useful/interesting even now and for the foreseeable future. It would be a shame they disappear.
As others have said, depending on what you are looking for, you can easily sort through the most relevant posts, either using the date range in the search feature or just by quickly looking at the dates.

Re: Too much old content on CruisersForum

The fundamenals of sailing havent changed since long before CF existed. What has changed is systems, boats, venue details, etc. So, there is still a lot of valid old info here. What is to be gained by deleting it? Just date constrain your search.

This forum, like pretty much all fora, has poor search engine.

You're much better using "site:cruisersforum.com <search term>" in google to search this forum.

Re: Too much old content on CruisersForum

Hi, guys, the first CF search requires an exact match: it is case sensitive, too. It is not brain dead, as Stu M suggested, but designed in a particular way, so it is good for some things and hopeless at others.

However, the CF Custom Google Search works like Google does, and it is great for concepts like <passerelle>, for instance, and will take you to pictures of passerelles and also to threads about them and making one's own, etc., etc.

It may be useful for you to make records of subjects' urls, in order to be able to get to them quickly.

Ann

So don't read it--move on.

Personally I like archives--all sorts of good info lies therein.

I disagree with BWNN. I just recently benefitted from some of the old content when I was trying to configure an old radio. Sometimes you need that old program or lesson learned in the 90's.

We are not all cutting edge. I find pleasure in restoring and using old school instruments, software and equipment. Maybe it is just me, but if you purge the older posts, people like me will miss out on the experiences of CF users in the past.

The cost of storage for old posts is minimal. There is value in old knowledge and experiences.
