Apparently a British stuntman has jumped from a helicopter at 2,000 ft and landed safely while using a "wing suit". Disproving the common wisdom that you need a parachute to skydive and live to try again. I couldn't resist when I read the report. I can not remember the name of the gentleman that posts regularly with the byline about skydiving and the need for a paracute. All in fun but truly a fantastic achievement. I would post the video but I can't figure out how to do it.

He didnt have a parachute? 2000 ft ,no parachute? no parachute?...wow..DVC

There are some videos floating around (youtube?) with a fearless person in a wingsuit jumping off the side of a mountain and roaring down the side of a canyon, even shooting gaps in a cliff and over trees.
Serious adrenalin junky. I think he had a parachute but he definitely had a helmet cam.

A wing suit generates lift but at high speed. Couldn't imagine the stall speed of a wing suit but I guess it's pretty high. Unless a pretty modified one. A hang glider is a good example of how much wing area is needed for low stall speeds.

and Davinchi(sp?)said that a man 5 ft5 tall would have to have a chest 4 ft thick to be able to flap his arms and take off..A HG with 165 sq ft of sail with a 165 lb pilot will stall at aprox. 26 mph..dont see how someone could land a wingsuit without a parachute..DVC

He may have done it once and survived, but I suspect that he should rest on his laurels and not push his luck. This sort of stunt will take him out if he does it lots of times.

The stuntman accomplished this feat a couple of days ago. He landed on a large target of cardboard boxes. I kid you not. I saw the vid on yahoo and google. The other posted vids are indeed amazing but they are all done with a chute.

Pretty impressive, but i guess when it comes to falling from great heights without the use of a parachute (and surviving) he has a ways to go to beat these guys....

If he were to finish the flight up hill, staying close to the ground, and stall on the way up, he could land on his feet. But it would take some practice. Stalling planes is an event up in AK.
