Re: Stolen sailboat from Halifax

Regardless of the circumstances a sad story.

What's impressive is that a boat thief managed to sail a 10.6m (35') monohull 340 nautical miles in less than 48 hours. Into the teeth of a hurricane. That's a pretty good run in that size boat.

Now I want to know more of the story.

I suspect the boat was stolen a day or two before they realized

Well, that's part of the more I'd like to know. According to the article they didn't know if was missing until the CG called. Then they went to check and found it missing. The article also says (with no backup) that they believe it was stolen Wednesday night. That leads to a 7-8 knot average for the trip.

I suspect we're missing something here, but then again, the purported thief is/was an RYA Yachtmaster.

Sadly, I don’t think that is the case. The implication is that someone went down with the boat.

40-50 foot waves when he was in it. I saw a synoptic chart on Larry exclaiming how it was 16m waves at one point. That boat got knocked down so many times it broke into pieces. Scary.

Re: Stolen sailboat from Halifax

According to MarineTraffic her AIS was on and she was shown departing Halifax on September 7 at 0200, which would lead me to suspect she was stolen Monday night/Tuesday morning. That makes far more sense.

Anyone have access to satellite AIS data?

Alternative view:

Sail close enough to the hurricane in the dangerous quadrant for the winds to start drawing you towards the centre.
Put the PLB/EPIRB on a small inflatable dinghy.
Activate the PLB/EPIRB and set it free.
Sail like mad away from the dangerous quadrant.
Be declared legally dead and start a new life in another country with a yacht and no criminal record.
