Nor had I. And now, having read most of the entries in his weblog, I suspect he has made the right decision. Some people were not meant for the sea.

Coops.
Found him (or his boat rather) when visiting L&M site some time ago.
They are building very fine boats, but it appear to be possible that this one is not their greatest success to date.

It's all been done, several times over. If he had another person on board and a diesel he'd still be out there enjoying his circumnavigation. No matter how you slice it a rich guy in a fancy carbon boat is never going to be carbon footprint free and the more he mentioned it the more it got under my skin. I know, I know, I'm a duck. I'm fully ready to be flamed by the sail purist and enviro crowd who see his mission as a great feat. I'm not a right wing anti EPA nut or a hippy tree hugger, but I really like internal combustion. Guess I'm more of a Robert Bebee fan, I did really like the voyages of Laura Dekker and Jess Watson. This whole thing has rubbed me the wrong way from the first utterance of hydrocarbon free. It seemed to fancy from the get go, to much dependency on electric power. Seems he's not used to roughing it, a simpler boat might still be out there. If you don't want to run a genny, a electric stove is not a good choice. I'm all for rich guys in fancy boats (sail or power) doing whatever they want. Hell I hope to be there someday, but passing it off as a social cause with the carbon free bit really irks me . Yawl can shoot me now, there's gotta be at least on person who agrees with me.
Sheesh do I have to fix everyone's posts?

They had those nasty hydrocarbon-consuming paraffin stoves.

Re: Stanley Paris calls it quits

In all these things, I would rather read a book after the event, or watch a video. All this hoo ha that folks do before they go just smacks of self promotion/publicity/need for fame/money raising etc and completely puts me off. Should I actually hear about it of course.

I made a decision many years ago to not watch the news or read the papers because it is just sensationalism or 15 minutes of fame stuff. Do I miss out on some things? Probably, but do not care. Am I ignorant of world matters? Obviously, but even if I knew of them, who will know what is the truth? Like most people, I would plump for the story that I wanted to believe, so I may still be ignorant, but think that I actually know something. Then I can argue on here.

The real crock of the carbon thing is this guy and his wife have his and her V8 SUVs for daily drivers and live in like a 6,000 square foot house. I personally disagree with that lifestyle, but it's his choice.

This whole thing was just another "record" to stroke his ego.

Yes but they didn't build 63 foot plastic boats (green boats?) to start with, then burn up tons of shoreside power blogging and encouraging others to use energy following the trip. The little single burner gimballed stoves burned a palty amount of kerosene, and their food was not prepackaged and frozen, again using huge amounts of energy before you even start.

I really don't know what he was trying to say with the hydrocarbon stuff. He would have used much less not building the boat and staying home. Reminds me of the guys flying around the world in private jets to lecture us on conserving energy. If he was trying to beat Dodge Morgans record, great go for it, especially at his age, but the bs was a bit much.

I believe it was Willy de Roos that said (nearly 50 years ago) that he planned on being the first person to have finished a fifth circumnavigation and to never have published a word about it. Totally agree. Cruising, for me at least, was not about proving anything to anyone. YMMV

Why all the hooha about the carbon thing? That isn't why he quit. It seems like his boom blew up which is more of a carbon fiber thing.

It has nothing to do with him quitting, it has to do with the perceived hypocrisy thing about some people who make a point on being "carbon neutral" and "carbon footprints", when in fact they consume far more energy than the average person does.
I don't live aboard yet, heck don't even own a boat where that's possible, but I bet the average liveaboard liberates a tiny fraction of the carbon that these hypocrites do.

Re: Stanley Paris calls it quits

The usual folly of the carbon free sorts is that they neglect to include the hydrocarbons used to make the resins, smelt the metals, mine the raw stock, etc. Windmills typically consume more energy than they ever produce if you include the precursors and maintenance. If they are at sea, its 3X worse. On the ethanol deal, no one ever counts the fertilizer & ammonia made from reformed petroleum derivatives (all outside the US), the cost of it manufacture, the cost of shipping, the cost of farming, the loss to the food reserves, increased resulting cost of food worldwide or the cost of operating the fermenter and distillation. It would be far more efficient to burn the cornstalks in an ordinary coal plant and feed the poor.

Remember the eco, animal terrorists of the 60s & 70s wearing leather belts & shoes?

The real inconvenient truth is you don't get something for nothing. Grandparents were right after all.
