yes, I find it does OK with code. That’s different. That’s pattern matching. But it doesn’t often understand how things work. It will give logically incorrect answers to things that we might do on boats for example. It doesn’t have a deeper understanding of the physical properties of various things. It will often give you the wrong advice
and I agree. It’s often much better than searching the web. But it really depends on what you are asking it. Next time I get a bad one, I will drop it in here so you can see what I’m talking about

Seems to help a lot as well in Perplexity telling it some context about who's asking, my answers are tilted towards cruising on a sailing boat, raspberry pi & a few other interests.
Roll on perfect speech recognition, speed things up no end.
Even manuals are very rarely looked at now, far quicker to ask an AI.
Anchored way off web access for a week or so just shows how easily we can get reliant on web access onboard
Noforeignland is well endowed with a multitude of ways to update position & leave a message.

Fully agree…I stayed away from FB my whole life but when moved aboard in 2020 and made an FB account.
Noforeignland is the other goto.

Re: Social Networking for Sailors
you should have a look at Noforeignland. It's an app, and also a website. made by cruisers and feature rich. its free, but you can support them via patreon if you wish. IT is like a worldwide cruising guide, the content current and from cruisers, vs. businesses. you can make social groups and track yourself and friends. you can make custom maps using filters that are really powerful. you can even save the maps for use offline.

Noforgeignland is the most popular among full-time cruisers. I highly recommend it!

Yes, this, exactly. In the 70s and 80s, I was an itinerant boilermaker, constantly traveling the eastern half of the US. I soon learned that the best restaurants in each town were found by word of mouth, as they did not advertise at all.
I actually miss the Yellow Pages because the high cost of a listing weeded out most of the fly-by-night scum. That’s not true in today’s connected world, it costs almost nothing for the scammers to project their cons far and wide.

Re: Social Networking for Sailors
I’m an old guy…….Facebook was great going around the world, there were groups for pretty well every area/passage where you could get a heads up on common issues/pitfalls before you arrived. Used it to pre-screen crew too - lots of pics of partying & drugs = an easy no, family & sailing got a video interview.
But our best social networking was via SSB or vhf - daily calls on passage were frequently the highlight of the day (what broke, was caught, real weather conditions ahead of you), cruisers vhf nets in port identified cruiser’s hang outs, events of interest, dinghy drifts, pot lucks on the beach.
Not everything is best done by internet.

Re: Social Networking for Sailors
Noforeignland is definitely the way to go. We have met quite a few boaters already on this app and the great advantage is you can see who is in close proximity so that makes it a great icebreaker. And we have been using it less than a month.

Sure, we're all subliminally programmed to feel comfortable with names and images we see over and over. In that way, advertising works. We buy those brands we're familiar with. Or at least, the majority of us do.
But to consciously say "yeah, I'm gonna go buy that" after seeing an ad? Wow. I had no idea....
|
I ignore the ads for the most part, some are so small I can't even read them. I did notice some of the ads while reading this discussion. One is for the NFL. Really? Hate is a strong word. I hate the NFL. I wish it would go away. I have not watched a "game" in years and will never watch a game. Yeah, that ad is gong to get me to PAY money to watch an NFL game.
I am not on Facebook. A man that created a website to rate woman is not someone I wish to affiliate. I hate Facebook.
I have seen ads for Jeep. Jeeps, along with too many vehicles today are very over priced, with cheap parts that are expensive to fix and replace, and have reliability problems from what I have read. If you gave me a recently built Jeep I would sell it. Yeah, that Jeep ad is going to make me go spend too much money on a POS I don't want. Going to run out today.....
Does advertising work? Of course it does, other wise companies would not spend millions/billions on marketing. Think how much money is spent trying to get you to buy one acidic sugar water over the other, i.e., Coke vs Pepsi. Those ads don't work for me either. That stuff is nasty. But they think the ads work enough to make the expense worthwhile.
But ads do not work on everyone. Just some, maybe most. I do know people who have to have the latest phone, though their phone is perfectly fine. They have to have a certain car brand. Yeah, advertising eats them alive....
I will go grocery shopping in the next day or so. I know what products I will be buying. Brand? Who knows. I will be looking at a given product, it's price, quantity and quality. Not one thing I buy will be based on an advertisement.

Take your dinghy and ride the anchorage.
Knock on boats.
People are doing the same trip as you so will enjoy sharing and socializing.
Don’t by shy !

Re: Social Networking for Sailors
The last couple years, we've used WhatsApp during cruises (both as leader and participant) as a great way to share info, ideas, pictures (small) and general merriment.
Outside of organized cruises, however, we've used Noforeignland, Active Captain and CF for things like "Is there a good restaurant/dinghy dock/sailloft here?" or "has this entrance been dredged?". Active Captain is good, but less immediate (or up to date sometimes) as the others.
If you're looking for where the party is tonight, try the VHF (almost every port has an intercom channel). And nothing beats paddling around the anchorage in your kayak!

Re: Social Networking for Sailors
There are many good pages on Facebook depending on where your at.
When cruising the Caribbean there were island specific pages and also pages like Kidsforsail, which helped families find other family boats.
We found pages for the islands which shared info for those islands. Also some had buy/sell pages for boat gear.
The local cruiser nets had more up to date info and were quite helpful when sharing news or resource information.
Haven't found any Apps that did the same though, it might be too small a market to cater to.

To make a cruising analogy, the effectiveness of advertising is like the susceptibility to sea-sickness. Some are more susceptible than others, but everyone is affected, on some level.

Re: Social Networking for Sailors
WhatsApp has largely replaced cruiser nets in most places. An anchorage, marina, island, or entire country will have a group for questions, itinerary ideas, etc.
Noforeignland is a great source for cruiser sources content on anchorages, businesses, etc.
Also, a lot of places (usually country-sized have “compendiums” of archived information like tracks, open cpn maps, reviews of anchorages, marinas, service providers…even who to contact to import your dog.
