Much like some people believe they are immune from the influence of advertising (some people are... but most are not), Facebook users will be driven to do things they likely would not. The harms of this kind of social media are well enumerated, and are only getting worse.

That's what I mean by "selling my soul." Using a fake account only partially protects.
It's actually not that difficult, cruisers are much more immune to manipulation by advertising, no address helps, & this site is social media as well & every word you write is known to the advertisers so they can target the ads you see.. you are bombarded by advertising every waking moment, FB is just yet another place doing it.
Might as well use the masses of free sailing stuff available on there.

I believe you are cruising the Pacific side,
when I cruised that area (1996-2000)the social and information aspects were addressed by checking the local nets via radio and
checking in every morning at a specified time.
Is that gone?

As I said, some people believe they are immune from influence. Research shows, few actually are.

Of course this is a social media site. That’s what I said. I’m not bombarded by any advertising because I block it all; all advertising, all trackers & snoopers. You can’t block it on Facebook.

So you could tell the difference between a cruiser who looks at FB for free useful stuff now and then & the same cruiser when they don't?

seems silly not to look at free useful stuff on the web now & then.

Google found some apps I've never heard of...

Sea People (the latest La Vagabonde business venture)

Go Sailing (by the American Sailing Assoc.)

Lovesail (some kind of dating app???)

Re: Social Networking for Sailors

I found a site called coboaters that is pretty decent for the US anyway.

Another that is very good is OPO - Offshore Passage Opportunities. I've gotten several crew through them - excellent!

I've used Facebook - it's necessary to do a lot of filtering...

It depends upon what you are looking for.

even I have not achieved that.

I have been kicked off of all of the rest, however, including here. ha ha

But… changed my ways

This is the closet thing to social media I use. I'm with Mike the FB, IG, and whatever I never had and never will.

Actually Boatman, as you know, it used to be hanging out on the dock! (and many other docks around the area)

The folks at my old apartment complex did lots of "social networking" while drinking beer after work on our apartment's dock.

I would be over at my beach cats doing whatever for a while, but always ended up with the cruisers on the dock which is where I learned about heavy duty full keel boats.

This being the mid-90's most of the old cruisers there sailed that style of boat back then.

They loved to walk the dock and critique each boat that was there.

One guy had a beautiful Cape Dory 30 with the wheel on the stern.

Another had a Tayana 37, then there was a C&C 37, Tartan 27, Soverel 30 which I crewed on a few times seeing it hit 10 knots with the spinnaker up, Pearson 323 and others.

Btw, that Soverel 30 is pictured on the sailboatdata page below at that apartment's dock.

That dock was destroyed during Hurricane Ivan in 2004 as was the apartment. It was all rebuilt but it took 2 years.

Rebuilt apartment and dock pictured below with a seawall which it didn't have when I lived there. If it did, I wouldn't have been able to store my boat's on the beach just above the high water line.

The pool was new also.

Question Re: Social Networking for Sailors

I don't vibe with Facebook either. Would you ever consider joining a new networking and Q&A app that was specific to our beloved sailing lifestyle? 2 weeks ago, my friend in NYC shared that some ex-techies he knows from college who were fed up of the politics of big tech are building a social network app based entirely on real-life connections for certain activities. You can only connect with someone if you are physically in the same spot. The rest of the features were unclear to me, but I liked the idea that the entire network is built by actual in-person connections not remote friend requests. Do you think you'd join something like this if its tailored for cruising and sailing?

Re: Social Networking for Sailors

I get a lot value out of Facebook groups, especially Canadian Sailcraft owners, Yanmar engines, etc..

Montreal is essentially a backwater village when it comes to finding suppliers of anything.

If not for Facebook, I would have never found Klacko Marine or Stevens Sailloft and others.

Went to school in Communist system, my father brough us to Canada in the seventies with nothing but CBC and CTV on the airways.

I am a lousy communist and even worse Canadian.

I'm certainly not. Advertising directly influences many of my purchase decsions.

The more something is advertised, especially if they send lots of expensive, glossy mailers to my house, the less likely I am to buy the product or service.

I figure, someone has to pay for all that advertising. That would be the morons who buy the product. I guess I'm a bit of a contrarian. So far, it has worked well for me.
