Re: So.... You want to cruise on a sailboat

I think the largest part just depends on personality.

If you're a sort of person who always tries to look primarily at the bright side of things - you'll have a certain experience, no matter where you are.

On the other hand - if you're the sort of person who always focuses on the negative aspect of things - that's a different life experience entirely.

Both people could be standing side-by-side - but they live it differently. Some are disappointed - others are elated.

Before embarking on this great adventure though, it is actually good to be prepared for a lifestyle totally unlike a shore based one (even RV living does not come close). Pretty much all the horror posts , even all the tongue in cheek ones, are not entirely inaccurate.

On the plus side, this life can be incredibly challenging, rich and rewarding. You live in the moment. Perpetual change results in every neurone firing (a constant state actually leaves our brains deadened, it needs contrast). Small amounts of deprivation mean that the simplest things are then acutely appreciated, in a way you never have before. This contributes to life on the water being so very, very highly addictive .

All the sundowners enjoying multi million dollar views in glorious locations about the time you would normally have been thinking about driving home from work in peak hour traffic are just an added bonus.

Re: So.... You want to cruise on a sailboat

I swallowed that well baited hook and have a boat now. Preparations to abandon the civilised life and become a watery vagrant are afoot.
After 20 years of suburbia and stupid i really can't be bothered to get old here, i'd much rather die on a beach than on a highway if it's all the same to everyone else.

Here's the thing though, 5000 years ago illiterate farmers were crossing the atlantic and indian oceans fairly regularly by all accounts in rafts and boats made of things that very specifically don't float for long. My favourite is St Brandan's leather boat.

My steel floaty and flappy thing is quite a miracle of technology i think.

I think about the early sailors and seriously ask myself, if they could then why can't i?

Naw they both have the same experiences. The difference is the pessimist tells you by the end of the 1st round at the bar. The optimist tells you by the 6th round

Re: So.... You want to cruise on a sailboat

The other day there were sailboats between me and my view of the sunset

It was still way better than looking at cars on the road around me while we all fought to get home from work.

100%

Dont get me wrong... we still make many/most of our decisions based on where we can drop the hook with nobody (or a chosen 1-2) boats around.
But even on the occasions when that cant happen... it's still better than any alternative I can imagine!

I announced the new plans to my clients and students this week. The response has been pretty wild...lol
