So.... You want to cruise on a sailboat
So you got the fantasy to drop out and going cruising on a sailboat. So you buy some magazines and fall deeper in love with swimming in clear water, catching your own fish, sundowners to pretty sunsets, cruiser bonfire parties, and the good life. Then you buy some “how to pick and boat” old books and start threads based on those in sailing forums and finally just ignore the replies because after all you have a book. Over time you even get some “how to sail books” and decide it is easy (it is, ........mostly, well kind of). Your are hooked and really to live the high life of boat life, all for $1,200/mo or $500/mo when the fish are biting.
Now, .......................... Are you ready for the truth?

My dad always says there’s very little truth in the world and the supply always exceeds the demand.

Re: So.... You want to cruise on a sailboat
Here's one truth:
When Jim and I left the States the first time, we thought we might be on an open ended cruise.
What actually happened was that inexpensive living in Mexico did not prepare us for the living costs in French Polynesia. We realized we needed to return to the US, and work another year, and sell my house for a cruising kitty. Which we did. And, we got married, too.
Life is full of changes. But even as already experienced coastal cruisers, and with all Jim's singlehanded racing experience, we didn't get it right the first time.
As they say, if at first you don't fricassee, fry, fry, again.
Ann

Re: So.... You want to cruise on a sailboat
Sailorboy1 now you find out sailing is kinda slow, the internet and phone reception can be lousy in some anchorage's and if you do not get some space from your partner soon you might murder them!
As for the $500-1200 a month budget that might have happened on one of the months. But the accidental gybe that tore the mainsail and broke the goose neck on the boom. Plus the $100 "I am sorry for what I said to you" meal really blew last month's budget.
But hey your sorta happy even if your partner has had to fly home to make sure the mail is being collected regularly. Once they return you can keep on living the dream.
But hey who wants to hear the truth, I am just a surveyor who is here to help you on your journey.....
Cheers

Re: So.... You want to cruise on a sailboat
You left out the part about doing this after purchasing a sailboat from a Boat Angel auction on eBay sight unseen for a couple of hundred dollars and you now want to refit for under a grand all while expecting a full Patreon crowd to fund your first "We bought a Boat" video.

Re: So.... You want to cruise on a sailboat
What!!!!???? Have you become disillusioned of your lifestyle? Or are you just reading your CC statements while drinking wine?Or is Covid-19 fatigue getting the better of you?
Honestly because of your budget threads I have not put my plan in action yet, waiting for a better financial cushion. But you have also encouraged the philosophy of not waiting too long either. So yes there must be a balance point that depends somewhere between wants and reality. It is a pretty big space to explore between the two.
Waiting patiently for your thoughts and budget this month. Especially after a post such as this!
