Sloppy rudder

I have a 1987 oday 27le. It has a Edson pedestal steering system. There is about 20 degrees play each way on the wheel before the rudder moves. The arm that connects to the rudder is tight. I think there is too much play in the cables. One left and one right. The cables are enclosed in a steel reenforced covering. Is there any way to tighten these cables or, it is what it is? Access is difficult unless I loose 100 lbs. I will save that for another thread.

Re: Sloppy rudder

You need to look to find where the slop is. Have someone slowly turn back and forth while you look at each component.. including inside the pedestal. I it's using enclosed type cables as it sounds, also look that the ends of the cables haven't come unattached.. they are held in place by a little bolt on tab..when that happens the whole cable moves around instead of moving what it supposed to be moving.
Google: "Boat control cables" or "Teleflex cables " and look at the pics and diagrams.
