Simple Pleasures: Fire on the Beach.

Cruising takes us to some deserted places and in a remote spot there is nothing nicer than a fire on the beach. It is a simple pleasure that is not taken advantage of as often as it should be.

Take a picnic dinner, your best bottle of red and sit back and watch the stars come out.

Just remember these adages:

The bigger the fire, the bigger the idiot.
Cool to touch, safe to leave.

Here are a couple of photos from a few weeks ago. Our beach fire on this occasion was in a beautiful, natural, almost cave-like rocky inlet.

Beach fires are a lot of fun. But "cool to touch" is not always "safe to leave" since there may be some glowing embers lurking under the ashes. Drown the ashes in a lot of water before you leave, and, if possible, build the fire below the high tide level.

1. Pour water
2. Stir ashes and coals
3. Pour water
4. Stir ashes and coals again
5. Pour water
6. Cover with sand/dirt

Love fires on the beach - but prefer my red wine from crystal glasses (not mugs)

Of course perhaps the mermaid is drinking irish coffee in which case mugs are allowed

Beautiful pictures. Unfortunately, it's illegal in some countries to make fire on the beach, at least at night. Just don't get caught.

And it can be dangerous, too, even deadly: close to my homeport, people were making a fire and there has been an explosion, probably from some unexploded ordnance from WWII (the area was heavily mined, bombed and shelled). One man died: Beach blast kills one | News24

That is certainly an important safety caveat:

Don't build beach fires on top of unexploded ordnance!

Wow .. never really gave that any thought. The island in Halifax hrb, where we have most of our beech fires, use to be a military base....somthing to think about. (Mcnabs Island)

Yeah, nothing I like better than landing my dinghy on a remote, pristine white sand beach....with a big black smudge pot of somebody else's bonfire smack in the middle of it.
Take nothing but photo's leave nothing but footprints.

I'll take grilling some freshly caught lobster over a fire on the beach, over a noisy, crowded, expensive resort anytime.

Even chartering, I've done trips where we've had a fire on the beach every single night.
