Selling while cruising

Hi all

Just thinking about next steps and how to sell my boat.

I am currently cruising in Asia and am thinking I will try and sell the boat when I get to Malaysia next year.

It occurs to me that it would save me alot of distance/time if I can sell the boat while I am cruising or on my way to Malaysia. So wondering has anyone bought or sold a boat while it is activly cruising? Or would it just be a wasted effort?

Im thinking that I could get an out of water survey done now to provide reassurance to any potential purchaser that the boat is in decent condition etc.

Re: Selling while cruising

I'm currently buying my own boat (based in Phuket)back off my ex after having had her on the market for a few years... and I can tell you:

1. The market is crap out there. You'll be lucky to get offered 50%
2. The paperwork logistics of selling a boat there are a nightmare!

BUT - I'm going out to try and sort it all in January, I'll let you know how it goes!

Re: Selling while cruising

You can sell your boat anyplace anytime. Mind the buyer's market will be very shallow in some places. You are (I guess) a part of the overprivileged (aka lucky) Western world. Otherwise people are happy with a plate of rice and vegetables.

You can only sell your boat to another person with savings, free time and illusions. Bet on the US, the EU and the few hub places of the World (e.g. the biggest towns, where most privileged people, of any culture, live).

If given a good (low) price your boat does not sell, you are in the wrong place. Well priced quality boats sell like buns in the right places.

Cheers,
b.

Re: Selling while cruising

Last 3 cats we bought had owners living aboard, did not worry us, they were pretty clean though. When engine bay and main bilges are spotless and they have touched up the Yanmars with Yanmar spray paint, polished the dinghy outboard cowl, and they have moved all their junk off - it is a good sign.

Re: Selling while cruising

i bought my boat in the med while it was cruising, and i had to fly to go see it though the airfare was not too much, about $200. the boat ticked all my important boxes and many other besides, the ad was thorough, there was a recent survey and the price was right.
there is no reason you can't try now, at least with all the free sites like fb, sailboatlistings, "hisse et oh" for the french crowd etc...
it's untrue that Asia is simply full of poor people with just a few rich in the cities, the issue there is that there simply is no sailing culture, and relatively little in terms of sailing infrastructure. so for sure the market will be thin there.
give it a shot, you've nothing to lose. go overboard with the details and photos and videos, and when you're online offer live online video tours/inspections.

Re: Selling while cruising

I have sold every boat while traveling and living aboard. However, it’s always been within the United States. Your location may cause problems. You need to be in a busy area where a lot of people are trying to buy boats.

Tips:

* Move as much of your junk off as you can
* keep everything spotless, even though you are living there
* Do all maintenance and make sure everything looks great
* Keep the exterior just as spotless as the interior
* Whatever junk you still have on the boat, put it away into lockers
