Seasick For The First Time

We sailed out of the Golden Gate at the end of November. It wasn't nice. I didn't get seasick.
Between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz we were becalmed with a 6'-8' swell and a dead engine, I didn't get seasick.
I was head down in the engine compartment, covered in diesel in that 6'-8' swell and I still didn't get seasick.
We had to motor into 10'-12' swells with about an 8 second period and 30 kts of wind for 6 hours, and I didn't get seasick.
We got beat up coming down the outside of Baja in a triple swell (NW, SW, & E) and I didn't get seasick.
Last night, at anchor, bow & stern anchors set, with about a 1' swell I was sitting here on CF & facebook and I got a little headache. Then my stomach was upset, then I was really tired. I got stupid, I got angry, and then I had to go lay down.
I complained to my wife and son and what did they say?
YOU'RE SEASICK!!!!!
DAMMIT!

I've never been throw up seasick but the last two times I've gone sailing with friends in the Gulf of Mexico at least half of the crew got sick. I'm beginning to think I might be bad luck!

Alcohol. You were not drinking enough. It calms the middle ear.

Apart from that, why were you on fore and aft anchors? That would have been setting up a jerky motion?

Bow & stern because at night the wind will push us sideways to the swell and we (all the boats) roll like mad.

Sometimes people who NEVER get seasick, get seasick once in a while ... I had to go up the mast once in heavy going ...

I am not sure there are people 100% sea-sickness-proof. But I know that those who do not get seasick have their cut-in period too, after any extended land stay.

That's what I have found--there is some combination of motion that will make a person sick eventually, even if they are normally fine. I'm pretty good, but a couple of times in the fog, with a lumpy sea, at night, with only running lights bouncing off the fog and nothing else to see, I have become completely disoriented, with my head feeling like it is spinning, to the point that I was unable to maintain my balance without holding onto something. That was accompanied by feeling extremely sick. Had to lay down in the dark and shut my eyes, and it eventually went away.

My wife has an iron stomach. I'm not so lucky, so I deal with it and won't let seasickness ruin our cruising fun. Fortunately, it usually only comes on when I'm really busy doing things on on or below deck following a departure into large swells.

It was not!
My most recent meal had been my own cooking, Dog Chorizo & eggs.

That probably was pretty safe. But rat tacos have a time delay that sometimes takes a couple of days. I also have read that it makes a difference on which beer you use to wash it down with.

In the end it all adds to that sense of danger and adventure!

The soft ginger candy chews, work well to minimize the impact, I wonder if it might have been something to do with eye strain looking at the screen. I have heard that your eyes are constantly refocusing looking a pixel screen, trying to find the edges of the object presented there. Or it could have been some the posts on CF.

Possibly the quick motion caused by bow and stern anchors set in combination with looking at a computer screen instead of the world around you.

Could you have liquid in your ear, sinus issues or an ear infection? That gets me every time. I have had inner ear troubles since I was a kid. Otherwise you found your kryptonite. We all have something. I tend to have more problems back on land after a long while on the water. I sway for days and my mind doesn't like the change I guess.

Ginger anything or even candied ginger (spice) can help. I travel with the strong stuff for different reasons.

I am a new sailor, but I have been around boats and the ocean for most of my life. I have never experienced seasickness before. On our last trip out we had just left the San Diego harbor when the wind just died. As the hours passed i realized I was developing a headache. A couple of hours later my stomach started to feel funny. Suddenly t occurred to me. Oh I'm sea sick.
