Re: Scammers on the Internet

We get lots of telephone scammers along the lines of " We are from Microsoft .....".
I try to sound wealthy, deaf and senile at the same time ( easy, actually, at least the last two).
Comments like "You'll have to speak up young man, did you say you were from the electiricity authority?" can keep them going a long time and by the end of it they are yelling their hearts out. To end it, "Computer? Did you say computer? I'm too old for that young man!"

Regards, Richard.

Sometimes what you think is scam spam isn't . I just received notice that an uncle I had never met died suddenly. He was living in petras. Their laws are very difficult. Anyway he left. Several hundreds of thousands of dollars to his nephew me. Yeah. The attorney needed a security deposit and was quite happy accepting my visa number exp date and the 3 digit code on the back. In return I get the inheritance which should be arriving via private courier any moment.. I can hardier wait.

I don't believe I said it was a scam.

Yes, inquiries were made - no responses , phone call not answered

Here is another ad in YM for same design and vintage :

36' Canadian Sailcraft CS 36

Year: 1986
Current Price: Can$ 71,900
Located In Hamilton, ON
Hull Material: Fiberglass
Engine/Fuel Type: Single diesel
YW# 76407-2344773

and another

36' Canadian Sailcraft CS 36

Year: 1983
Current Price: Can$ 64,900
Located In Sidney, BC
Hull Material: Fiberglass
Engine/Fuel Type: Single diesel
YW# 1826-1892664

The one that I found interesting was for sale at $22 000 -- and from all appearances and the ad - looking in good nick - a very clean boat.
Of course it may have a serious defect, which is not revealed.

Sorry, i assumed from the thread title you thought "scam". Anyway, here is a second and different ad for the same boat. Maybe they changed brokers who knows. Price looks good but it now says "as is, where is" ... ??? Looks worth another call/email.

My point is, do we really need someplace to report a possible scam on the internet? Are you really concerned that this boat listing needs some action by some authority? There are millions of dubious people doing dubious things all over the world all the time. Take responsibility for your actions and don't expect that there is some agency or person who is supposed to keep a watch out for every conceivable scam. Next thing, you will expect us to report to the USCG if we see someone not wearing a lifejacket.
Let's see if I got this right. If someone sold you some property and didn't actually have the right to do so, you would just say "silly me I better be smarter the next time" and be done with it.

Of course there are people to report scams to. You federal police forces and likely your state forces all have departments that deal with internet scams.

The OP didn't buy anything. He didn't even try to buy anything. No scam was committed. There is nothing to prove that the boat listing wasn't real and that price was an honest mistake. What was described sounded fishy, but that was it. My post was strictly in reaction; the OP wanted to report a yacht listing that looks suspicious, and I don't think we need an agency for that.

If someone defrauds you of money, then we already have ways of dealing with them, but I am leery of a society that encourages reports of suspicious behavior as minor as a dumb boat classified. What's next? Reporting people who fail to signal when changing lanes?

A scam only becomes a fraud/crime after the fact...
you laid out the dosh and got nothing...
until then its just an offer to idiots...
Which reminds me... I inherited the rights to an old bridge in London... could be a really good earner if you set up a toll booth at one end... will exchange for a good round the world blue water capable boat or $400,000 cash....
Would do it myself but poor health and allergies prevent my residing in large cities....

Re: Scammers on the Internet

Good discussion, I didn't mean for this to go this far, I guess I should have been more specific. When I said I was new to all this I meant computer, forums, and buying a sailboat. I try to stay out of the 'real world' as much as possible. Whenever humans get involved inevitably someone screws it up.

But your right DOUG86, there is too much interference from government organizations, but what if this person has done it before, many times and has just not been caught? Not everybody is as smart as you, and tend to learn the hard way. But if there is a way to stop someone from taking advantage of the less fortunate, shouldn't we do something?

Oh, by the way boatman, will you take a check?
